HAMBURG — Proceeds from this year’s annual Dr. Russell J. Joy Memorial Golf Tournament have been earmarked to provide funding for upgraded exercise equipment for cardiac rehab patients at two of Lake Erie Regional Health System’s medical facilities: Lake Shore Health Care Center in Irving and Gowanda Urgent Care & Medical Center.
Improvements at the Gowanda facility are still dependent on pending state approval.
The tournament will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 28.
“We’re delighted to be the recipients of this year’s golf tournament,” said Bonneta Nobles, RN, cardiac rehab coordinator and this year’s tournament honorary co-chair. “While our cardiac rehab department is already a great place for those pursuing healthy lifestyle changes after life-altering cardiac interventions, new equipment and upgrades can make this experience even better for patients.”
The tournament is named in memory of Joy, a long-time physician in the WNY area.
“Dr. Joy was my friend, colleague and family doctor for many years and endorsed exercise for cardiac health,” Nobles said. “With a successful tournament outcome, we can make his dream a reality.”
Among the equipment purchases officials said they hope to acquire are a seated recumbent stepper, new treadmills and an elliptical cross-trainer stationary exercise machine.
“We invite participants to the tournament, as well as sponsors or anyone wishing to make outright contributions to assist toward the purchases of these much-needed items,” Nobles said.
This year’s tournament will take place at the Gowanda Country Club, located at 42623 Brown St. in Collins, with lunch and registration at 11 a.m. and a shotgun tee-off at noon.
There is a per-golfer cost. Discounts are available for foursomes and sponsors. This price includes an 18-hole round, a shared cart, a goody bag, lunch and a grilled steak dinner.
This year’s tournament hole-in-one prize is a 2013 Dodge Dart, sponsored by Fredonia Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep.
