United World Martial Arts celebrates 10 years in Hamburg

Masters Butch Klawon and Sam Sanchez
HAMBURG — United World Martial Arts, located at 17 Buffalo St., is celebrating its 10th anniversary in the village of Hamburg.

The business started out offering karate classes and now has 3 – 5-year-old ninja, kids and adult karate classes and cardio kickboxing classes, all offered six days per week.

Masters Sam Sanchez and Butch Klawon attributed their business’s success to the people of Hamburg and their referrals.

In 2003, Klawon came upon the former Tree House in the village and contacted Sanchez about opening the martial arts business at that location.

During the past decade, UWMA has grown with the village of Hamburg. The two masters said they consider their clients not as only customers, but members of their Dojo family.

“The past 10 years has brought challenges with the economy and an uncertainty in small business, but the village’s dedication to revitalizing the area through New York state grants kept our business with the hope of growth,” the masters said. “UWMA has never seen a declining year.”

The business began in August 2003 with 32 students and now has an active clientele of several hundred; the masters have taught more than 1,000 students, during the past 10 years.

Members of UWMA marched in 10 local holiday parades, attended nine Burger Festivals, supported the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, supported National Night Out, attended local school functions and participated in many other area events.
