Evans screens movies in the park for sixth year

HAMBURG — As the calendar officially switches to summer, the town of Evans is taking advantage of the season with its sixth annual “Movie Night at the Park,” held at the Evans Town Park, located at 8965 Lakeshore Road.

Supervisor Keith Dash said that the town was forced to scale this season back, due to monetary issues.

“We had to drop down to two movies this year because of budgetary concerns,” Dash said. “In the past we’ve had three films to show but this year could only budget for two. Moving forward, we hope to pick up the third one again, possibly even next year, if we can.”

“The ‘Movie Night at the Park’ has been a successful event for the town and its residents for six seasons now, and at no cost to the residents. And what better way to spend a warm summer evening that at the town park under the stars with your family?” he added.

“The Town of Evans Recreation Advisory Board is gearing up for the 2014 season of ‘Movie Night at the Park’ for residents and visitors to the community,” a news release for the event read. “Building off of the success of the last five seasons, the town once again will be adding to the slate of fun-filled activities including a bounce house, children’s games and activities and other entertainment.”

This season will feature two films, on July 17 and Aug. 14. Both movies will begin at dusk, approximately 8:45 p.m.

The season will kick off on July 17 with “MegaMind,” a 2011 movie about “a brilliant and diabolical super-villain Oobermind (voiced by Will Farrell) who has been attempting to conquer Earth for over 20 years but, each time, he’s been thwarted by his arch-nemesis, the caped superhero Metro Man (voiced by Brad Pitt). But all that changes one day when Oobermind accidentally kills Metro Man in the throes of one of his evil plans. Suddenly finding himself without a foe to overcome, the despondent evil genius decides that the only way out of his rut is to create a new super rival. Can the Evil Genius switch sides and become the Hero of his own story?”

The second, and final, film, which hits the big screen on Aug. 14, is ‘The Lego Movie,’ which tells the story of a “lowly Lego® figure (voiced by Chris Pratt) who joins a group intent on battling an evil force after a case of mistaken identity” in this computer-generated comedy from the filmmakers behind ‘Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs’ and co-director Chris McKay (‘Robot Chicken’). Will Arnett co-stars as the voice of Batman, who, along with Superman, makes appearances in the Warner Bros. picture. Elizabeth Banks, Morgan Freeman, Will Ferrell, Liam Neeson, and Alison Brie head up the rest of the voice cast.

“Year after year, ‘Movie Night at the Park’ continues to be the most popular family-friendly entertainment in our town,” Director of Community Development Lori Szewczyk said. “In addition to the entertainment value, this event allows residents to get out and socialize with one another, while enjoying one of the town’s most beautiful recreational assets.”

All movie licensing fees and the special activities are being provided by the support of local sponsors.

Movies will be postponed in the event of inclement weather.
