Let’s talk about Civil War officers

NORTH COLLINS — The North Collins Historical Society will host a presentation titled “From Lieutenants to Generals: The Lives of Commissioned Officers in the United States Infantry during the Civil War” on Sunday, Sept. 22.

This presentation is part of an ongoing series of talks in conjunction with the North Collins Historical Museum’s current exhibit “Southern Erie County in the Civil War and War of 1812.”

The presentation will cover the roles, responsibilities and everyday lives of commissioned officers in the Union Army. The session will include original and reproduction items of commissioned officer uniforms and equipment and feature southern Erie County officers, along with their photos.

The 90-minute talk will be hosted by Kevin O’Beirne, an environmental engineer from Hamburg, who has published more than 20 magazine and newspaper articles about the Civil War. He is the coauthor of the book “The Columbia Rifles Research Compendium.”

The presentation will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the North Collins Historical Museum, located at 2021 Center St. in the village of North Collins. The admission is free.
