The North Collins Historical Society is hosting a Southern Erie County in the Civil War and War of 1812 exhibit through Christmastime 2013 at their museum at 2021 Center St., North Collins. This is a combined effort of the town historians and/or historical societies of North Collins, Brant, Collins area, Concord, Eden, Evans, and Gowanda area. It also includes a section on the War of 1812 for this same area.
A special program in the current series will be Civil War Music presented by Fr. John Kwiecien, an active Civil War Re-enactor, with his antique guitar and banjo on July 21 beginning at 1:30 p.m. Patriotic tunes and favorites of Civil War troops will be featured.
The exhibit includes profiles of over 650 southern Erie County soldiers who served in 93 different New York State Civil War regiments and in those of 15 other states, as well as photos of about 100 of these soldiers. There are profiles of just over thirty War of 1812 soldiers and even a picture of one of them. If you think you might have a soldier from either of these wars in your family, come and check the master lists.
There are also photos of three Grand Army of the Republic Posts and equipment, reproduction maps and assorted memorabilia and artifacts from the Civil War.
There is no admission charge. Museum hours are from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. all June Sundays, July 7 and 21, August 4 and 18, and September 15 and 29. October through December the museum will be open the fourth Sunday of the month, same hours.
