BOSTON — The Rev. Phil Owen, longtime pastor at Berean Free Presbyterian Church in Boston, has received the Spiritual Guidance Volunteer of the Year Award from the New York State Health Facilities Association/New York State Center for Assisted Living, District No. 8.
Owen has volunteered at Elderwood at Hamburg, located on Maelou Drive in Hamburg, for 27 years, providing worship services at the facility twice per month and visiting residents individually, during the week.
In describing why Owen received the award, the nominators said that “‘Rev. Phil,’ as he is known at Elderwood, has an uncanny ability to remember each resident’s name and the details of their lives. Family members rely on Rev. Owen’s wisdom and support. Countless times, he has kept vigil with family members as a loved one lay dying, or has put aside everything to join family members keeping vigil over a resident in the hospital.”
Owen and all of Elderwood at Hamburg’s volunteers are being honored by Elderwood during National Volunteer Week, April 6 – 13.
