Jennifer Spillman Martello, 29, died on July 15, after apparently being struck by a vehicle while walking along Big Tree Road in Hamburg. The road in that area is narrow, and there is no sidewalk. She was about 200 yards away from her home, headed away from the house where she lived with her husband Sam and their 14-month-old daughter Amelia.
Her body was discovered at about 12:35 a.m., when a passerby called the Town of Hamburg Police Department to report that a body was alongside the road. She was discovered unconscious with a head injury, and died later that afternoon.
By all indications, she was hit by a vehicle, but police are still working to figure out more details.
Hamburg police did say that a vehicle was towed from a nearby residence in connection with the investigation, but that it was returned to the owner and was not believed to have been involved. Neighbors also had little information, except to offer condolences to the family.
Four police cars were parked outside of Martellos duplex on the 3600 block of Big Tree Road at midmorning Tuesday. Hamburg police officers placed yellow markers about 200 yards away, on the north side of the road, where Martello was found.
The Martello family had moved into their house about three months ago, and were both still recovering from an automobile accident.
Martello graduated from Frontier High School in 2003 and was a sports fan, especially the Bills.
Investigators urged anyone with information who can assist in the investigation to call the town Police Department at 648-5111, Ext. 2502.
