HAMBURG — Western New York experienced a break from the winter gloom, temperatures climbed slightly and, through the many, large windows of Design Salon & Spa in Hamburg, sunlight washed over the colorful room.

The local salon, opened by Clare Kryszak of Eden, will celebrate its 10 year anniversary this August.

“It was that time for me to get my own place,” Kryszak said. “It just felt right. It was good timing. I love Hamburg and this area. This spot is a good spot, to me, because you’re in the middle of Orchard Park, Hamburg, Eden, Lackawanna, West Seneca ... it’s a nice, central location.”

Licence-equipped, Kryszak studied cosmetology and graduated from Erie 1 Boards of Cooperative Educational Services in West Seneca. Continuing education will include educators from Paul Mitchell© attending the salon to teach classes, a few times per year.

Design Salon & Spa carries brand names such as REF Professional Hair of Sweden©, Paul Mitchell and Joico®.

The salon will typically host between five and 10 customers, per day. The owner said that many patrons become regular customers through word-of-mouth.

“I love working with people. [The customers] become your friends,” she said, adding that Design Salon & Spa has a very family-oriented vibe. “I think people feel comfortable here.”

“It’s more like home,” said salon stylist and Lackawanna resident Abbey Styles.

Whether it is solving the world’s problems through the art of conversation or watching patrons grow from youngsters to high school graduates, Kryszak said that a level of trust must be achieved, with customers.

“Hair is personal. And you have to gain their trust,” Kryszak said. “When people trust you, it’s the ultimate compliment.”

The salon’s three-person team members said that they enjoy bringing happiness to people, with what they do.

Stylist Laura Carestio of Springville said, “I love that you bring somebody’s personality out, with their hair. When they’re having a bad day, you just make their day so much better. It’s the greatest thing in the world.

“It’s a mini therapy session,” she added. “I think it’s rewarding to come into work and have people actually like you and love you, and appreciate what you do, versus going to a cutthroat job where you’re battling everybody to just do your job. It makes it a much more happy day.”

The salon’s services include manicures, pedicures, hair styling, extensions, wedding party styling, facial waxing, keratin treatments, smoothing systems and makeup.

“Who wouldn’t want to come into work and make people feel good about themselves?” Styles said. “That’s the reward, right there.”

With a stated goal of strong communication, the stylists ask their customers to give them details about their hair routines. They also educate their patrons, during a session, from everything to the technique of blow-drying hair to the way in which the salon does color treatments. A color bar allows patrons to watch the stylists mix products, customizing color to the requirements of each customer’s hair.

In addition to allowing customers to purchase the products used in-house, the salon also sells tools. According to Carestio, a benefit of purchasing from this local establishment is that the salon offers a two-year warranty and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

An unsatisfied patron may return an unwanted item to the salon, and everything will be taken care of from there. This eliminates the hassle and potential of wasting money, the stylists said.
