Rubies and reindeer: Tevington Jewelers gets into the holiday spirit

Heather Kolb
HAMBURG — The village of Hamburg began to sparkle a little bit brighter this past June, with the addition of transplanted Tevington Jewelers.

Owner Heather Kolb had originally opened up shop in Orchard Park in 2009, but took advantage of the closing of Gold & Pearl Studio on Main Street in Hamburg to move her business.

Kolb said that her Orchard Park location was set back off the road and that the Hamburg store, with its position in a busy part of the village providing plenty of foot traffic, was perfect for her needs.

The graduate gemologist, gem and diamond expert did not start her career in the gem-encrusted world of jewelry. She said that she dabbled in the legal field for a time, until she decided to follow her dream. “I’ve loved jewelry since I was a baby,” she said. “I would parade around in big costume jewelry; I just loved it.”

She studied at the Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica, Calif., an institution she described as the “foremost authority in the industry. They are like the Harvard of gemology schools.”

Kolb then spent 15 years traveling around the country, representing all of the major jewelry chains and gaining knowledge of the business.

As one of the only graduate gemologists in New York state with a degree in diamond grading and gem identification, she said that her education, coupled with her years of experience, give her a “distinct advantage,” because “few have appraised as many diamonds or fine jewelry pieces as she has.”

Kolb explained that, once she had children, she decided to settle down and stop traveling, while still being part of the industry. She credited her involvement in the jewelry industry with giving birth to the concept of what her store and the quality of its product would be.

She described Tevington Jewelers as “a smaller scale store that focus[es] on high-end, quality mountings and stones, not one overstocked with mass-produced, lower quality promotional items that don’t stand the test of time.”

The engagement ring/bridal specialty shop has a variety of fine precious metal offerings on hand for customers’ perusal. Kolb chooses all of the stones and individual pieces and said that she offers “something for any budget.”

The shop provides jewelry repair, remounting and restyling of existing items and a fully-documented appraisal service.

In addition, the shop offers custom design jewelry. Tevington brand items are custom created in a step-by-step process, in concert with clients’ specific requests. “We have complete quality control,” Kolb explained. “We work closely with our customers, so there is no guesswork.”

Kolb described her technique as including “old-world craftsmanship techniques with state-of-the-art, computerized CAD design, to custom create unique and, in many cases, one-of-a-kind artistic pieces, superior in both quality and design.”

Clients with custom requests may see renderings of their designs, in full color, before the jewelry is even made. “They have a creative hand in the design and add their own personal touch,” Kolb explained.

She said that customers at her store can be assured of the quality of her products. “I’m qualified to be reading stones,” she said. “My customers are not making blind purchases.”

The store owner said that the people of Hamburg have welcomed her with open arms; many, already loyal customers of Gold & Pearl Jewelers, continue to patronize the shop, located on the corner of Main and Buffalo streets.

Kolb is using the village’s Green Friday event to give back to the community. She will be offering specials on jewelry, all day. Customers who are participating in the Village Business Advisory Council’s “Green Passport to Prizes” contest may get a unique store stamp from Tevington Jewelers, on their shopping spree throughout the village.

In addition, shoppers may interact with Santa’s reindeer, who will be outside the shop on Green Friday, Nov. 29. Dasher, Dancer, Prancer and Vixen will greet customers from 1 – 3:30 p.m. on the afternoon of that event.

Tevington Jewelers is located at 1 Main St. in Hamburg, at the traffic circle.

Business hours are 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The shop is also open from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Thursdays and by appointment only on Sundays and Mondays. For more information, call the store at 662-4397 or visit www.tevingtonjewelers.com.
