HAMBURG — Not only is Laura Hackathorn a trustee of the village of Hamburg, but she is also the owner of What a Woman Wants accessory boutique.
This life-long resident has spent 11 years as trustee to the village and is also liaison to the business district. Her acquiring of the store was in keeping with her stated effort of maintaining Hamburg’s revitalization.
She recently did a walk-along with The New York Times for an article on Hamburg, about how the structure of the village makes the location an ideal place for pedestrian traffic and a focus on community businesses.
What a Woman Wants has been in existence since October 2010; Hackathorn has been the owner since December 2011. The previous owner, a resident of East Aurora, decided to sell the shop and Hackathorn said that she was eager to take the position.
“It just seemed like the right time,” Hackathorn said.
As the only owner of the shop, she is in charge of stocking the boutique with items to follow the newest trends and pieces that she believes will be most attractive to her clientele. Through sales representatives, trade shows and the Internet, she has continued her success.
There are all types of jewelry on display, including necklaces, rings, bracelets, watches and earrings, as well as clutches, purses and hats.
“I like to feature things that are eclectic and fun,” Hackathorn said. She stays up on the current fashion trends and applies them to most types of style for women. “We have the conservative [style], but we also have the more fun [style],” she said.
Shoppers are divided somewhat in half, she said. Some come into the boutique shopping for themselves, while the other portion is searching for gifts. Gift-wrapping is free, which she said is the perfect convenience for the customer who is on the run and in need of a present.
In various sections of the store are “girlfriend gifts.” Hackathorn described these as fun, smile-worthy items to give as gifts to friends. They include quirky wine glasses, flasks that say “Party Diva,” or a “Grow-a-Boyfriend” kit (put the figure in water and it will grow six times its original size).
She also said that she brings in special feature items for her clientele. “I have to surprise customers,” she said. Her most recent features were a selection of designer watches and hand-sewn decorated boots imported from Turkey.
Some of the items have stories behind them. One shelf is covered in metal work pieces that were created by an artist who has also sold his work to Lady Gaga.
“It’s great quality, but not at a high price,” Hackathorn said.
The boutique is also involved in the community, outside of the stores walls. The shop works with the Village Business Advisory Council of Hamburg to encourage people to shop local and has been involved at the Hamburg Wine About and also the annual Burger Fest.
“So far, I’ve been achieving high sales then the year before,” the business owner said.
