Angola

Chicken barbecue in Angola May 11


First Congregational UCC, 132 N. Main St., Angola, is holding a chicken barbecue on Saturday, May 11 from noon until the food is sold out.

The meal includes one-half barbecue chicken, macaroni salad, baked beans, a roll and dessert.

The cost is $9. Eat-in or take-out is available. The church is handicap accessible.

Grief-share meetings at Faith UCC

Weekly grief-share meetings are held at Faith United Church of Christ on Sunday afternoons. Faith UCC Sunday school available

Faith United Church of Christ Sunday school has classes available for ages 3 and older. Sunday school classes are divided by age level with classes for Pre-K through Kindergarten, Grades 1-3, Grades 4-5, Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12, and for adults. Classes start at 9 a.m.

Armed Forces Week opening ceremony


The 53rd annual Western New York Armed Forces Week Opening Ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 5 at 12:45 p.m. at Erie Canal Harbor (near the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park, 1 Naval Park Cove, Buffalo).

The event is free and open to the public.

Derby

Towel bingo May 5


Towel bingo will be held at the Highland Hose Fire Hall, 1 George Nablo Parkway, Derby, on Sunday, May 5. Doors open at noon and bingo starts at 1 p.m.

Lunch can be purchased, and desserts, coffee, tea and soda will be available for free.

Basket raffles, a 50/50 drawing and door prizes will also be available.

Eden

Barbecue and family fun day May 11


Eden Cooperative Nursery School will be hosting its 8th Annual Barbecue and Family Fun Day on Saturday, May 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Barbecue dinners will be provided by Weidner’s BBQ and featured activities include a basket raffle, lottery tree, face painting, balloon animals, stuffed animal veterinary clinic, family dance music, trucks to touch and a rummage sale.

Tickets are $10 per person at the door. Tickets may also be purchase pre-sale at the same cost by contacting the school at 992-3344.

Eden Garden Club meets May 14


The Eden Garden Club meets on Tuesday, May 14 at 7 p.m. at Eden Jr./Sr. High School.

Maryann Jumper will present “This Glorious Earth.” The club will also be exchanging plants.

Immaculate Conception Church, 8791 Main St., Eden, is holding a chicken barbecue on Sunday, May 5 at 11:30 a.m.

The cost for adults is $10, and $5 for children. Take-outs are available.

Hamburg

Hamburg Nursery barbecue May 14

The Hamburg Nursery School is sponsoring a Chiavetta’s chicken barbecue on Tuesday, May 14 at 3 p.m. at the Hamburg Presbyterian Church, 177 Main St.

Side salads will be provided by Water Valley restaurant. A homemade bake sale, Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle and Lockwood’s hanging flower baskets will also be available.

Hamburg Garden Club meets May 8


The Hamburg Garden Club will meet on Wednesday, May 8 at noon in the Hamburg Community Center.

The topic is “Architectural History of our Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens.”

Botanical Gardens Docent Bob Snyder will share his knowledge of the gardens that are the product of landscaping architect Frederick Law Olmsted, glass-house architects Lord and Burnham and botanist and plant lover John F. Cowell.

Friendly Travel Club meets May 6


The Friendly Travel Club meets on Monday, May 6 at the Hamburg Senior Center, 4150 Sowles Road, Building H at 6:30 p.m.

Openings for an overnight trip to Pittsburgh, Pa. on July 26-27 are available. Trips are being planned for summer and fall.

The Hamburg Public Library is holding an iPad basics free computer class on Monday, May 6 at 6:30 p.m.

Country Porcelain Artists will be meeting on Monday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria of the Hamburg Middle School.

Club member Doris Wodzinski will share her collection of rose designs painted by various artists.

‘Spring Fling’ music on May 5


The Roland E. Martin’s Freudig Singers will be performing a “Spring Fling” on Sunday, May 5 at 4 p.m. at St. James United Church of Christ, 76 Main St., Hamburg.

The program includes selections from “Mame,” “Bye, Bye, Birdie,” “Aida” and “Hello, Dolly!”

The Cloverbank Home Bureau presents its inaugural towel bingo and theme basket event on Thursday, May 16 at 7 p.m. in the Cloverbank Elementary School, 2761 Cloverbank Road, Hamburg.

First Girl Scout at UUCH May 5

Erin Kosich will speak about the Girl Scout movement in her message “Re-Inventing Yourself: The life and work of Juliette Gordon Low - The First Girl Scout” on Sunday, May 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Hamburg, located on the corner of Union and Center streets.

Kosich is a local Girl Scout leader and owner of the Embraceable Ewe knitting shop at 213 Main St. in the Village of Hamburg. Religious education and child care are provided. It is open to the public.

Emerson Home Bureau meeting

The Emerson Home Bureau will meet on Tuesday, May 7 at 7 p.m. in the Hamburg Middle School cafeteria for the annual auction of handcrafts and baked goods. There will be a preview at 7 p.m. and the auction begins at 7:30 p.m.

Car seat safety inspection May 5

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office is holding a free car seat safety inspection on Sunday, May 5 from noon to 4 p.m. at Smarty Pants Childcare, 4390 Quinby Drive, Hamburg.

A certified road patrol deputy will be on hand to teach the basics of car seat selection, correct use and proper installation.

Krolick’s chicken barbecue on May 11


A Krolick’s barbecue chicken dinner is being held on Saturday, May 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Southtowns Fitness Center, 23 Lake St., Hamburg, to benefut the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure and the Southtowns Fitness Center bike team.

Dinners include a half chicken, potato salad, macaroni salad and a roll with butter.

Tickets are $9 pre-sale, $10 the day of the event. Tickets can be pruchased from any Tour de Cure bike team member at Southtowns Fitness Center.

Town of Hamburg clean-up on May 4


The 18th annual town-wide clean-up sponsored by the Hamburg Rejuvenation Project in conjunction with the villages of Hamburg and Blasdell is scheduled for Saturday, May 4.

Kick-off begins at 8:30 a.m. at Hamburg Town Hall, 6100 South Park Ave. At that time, volunteers will receive locations, maps, safety instructions and clean-up supplies.

Volunteers can partake in a hot dog lunch provided by area vendors.

Reading dog returns to Hamburg library

The Hamburg Public Library invites children to stop in to visit Ginger, the “Tail Waggin’ Tutor,” a reading therapy dog trained through Therapy Dogs International to be a non-judgmental listener and a great encouragement to struggling readers. She will be coming back to the Hamburg Library on Saturday, May 11 and May 25 at 10 a.m.

Summer Fitness Center memberships

The Town Park Fitness Center is offering a summer membership special to college students for $50. Town residency is required to be eligible.

The price of the membership includes a resident discount card and parking pass for the Hamburg Town Park and the Fitness Center. Membership includes one free workout with a personal trainer and a free personalized workout plan.

Langford

Round and Square Dance May 11

A Round and Square Dance is being held on Saturday, May 11 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Epiphany of Our Lord Parish Hall located at 10893 Sisson Highway in Langford.

Music will be provided by Pure Country with Paul Zittel. Pizza, beer, pop and snacks will also be available.

Admission is $25 for families, $7 for adults and $5 for children ages 10-15.
