Live! Starring...You! teaches students communication skills, confidence

Journalist and children’s book author Tim O’Shei based his career on two firm beliefs. The first, he said, is that “writing is a fantastic tool for touching all of one’s dreams.” Secondly, he believes that “kids can do amazing things.” In 2009, O’Shei connected these two concepts to create an innovative company called Live! Starring...You!, which equips students with writing and communication skills through workshops, author visits and in some cases, the chance for teen reporters to interview real stars.“They learn to work on camera and write, so they become broadcasters and writers,” said O’Shei. The celebrity interviews are posted on YouTube and the LSY! website, in order to connect students... more

Misiak Jewelers to close after 16 years of service
Robert and Dianne Misiak have a hard time referring to their customers as anything other than friends.“Most of the people that come through here are repeat customers, people we have grown to known through the years and people we’ll sadly miss,” said Dianne about their jewelry business in the Village of Hamburg, which will be permanently closing their doors at the end of the month. After 16 successful years at their Pine Street location, the husband and wife team decided to retire to spend more time with family.“It was a difficult decision to come to,” said Robert, who has been in the jewelry business for 45 years. “I kept asking myself, ‘What time is the right time?’”Robert’s passion for designing... more

D.J. Kuras gets back in the game

[photo1]D.J. Kuras shakes a lock of blonde hair out of his eyes as he concentrates on the ball coming his way down the soccer field.Oblivious of the biting April wind and unafraid of the players twice his size barreling toward the goal, D.J. darts out to meet the ball, weaving through players as he deftly steals the ball from his opponents. On the sidelines, D.J.’s family and friends cheer, perhaps unusually loud for what is a simple maneuver. But D.J.’s fans are not just celebrating the game, they are rejoicing over D.J.’s determination to never give up, no matter how high the odds are stacked against him.The 14-year-old Eden resident has been fighting for his life for as long as he can remember.... more

Modern day slavery: Human trafficking conference to be held at Hilbert College April 26, 27

[photo1]It could be the busboy who seems to work every shift, or the tired, quiet maid you met during your last hotel stay. Victims of human trafficking walk among us every day, often seen but rarely noticed. Though misunderstood to be just a problem of eastern, less-developed countries, human trafficking occurs across the United States, including the Western New York area.In an effort to raise awareness and stop the atrocities of trafficking, the Franciscan Federation and Hilbert College will sponsor “Slavery in our Modern World: Conference on Human Trafficking,” on Thursday, April 26 from 1 to 4 p.m.; and Friday, April 27 from 9 a.m. to noon at the college, 5200 South Park Ave. in Hamburg.... more

Vision, determination drives Warhol’s culinary success

[photo1]Throughout his high school years, Ross Warhol washed dishes in a hot, crowded restaurant kitchen. Though he came home most nights exhausted and reeking of grease and food scraps, Warhol was inspired. It was the beginning of an incredible culinary career that has taken the Hamburg native across the United States and Spain, where he was a chef for the best restaurant in the world.“The chaos of the kitchen was a drawing point for me,” said Warhol, who, at age 24, is the executive chef of the Athenaeum Hotel on the Chautauqua Institution.“I just stood back and took it all in,” said Warhol, adding that simply being present in the kitchen provided him with tips and techniques that he would... more

Buffalo Laboratory Theatre to present Machine Stops from April 13 to April 28

[photo1]The Buffalo Laboratory Theatre was set to begin rehearsals for its final production of the season when the unthinkable happened: one of the lead actors broke his leg. Reluctant to recast and potentially alter the chemistry between the actors, BLT decided to hold the play until next season. Instead, they used the opportunity to revisit a previous production, “Machine Stops” by BLT’s artistic director, Taylor Doherty.“This is a laboratory. We can be resourceful and reinvent when something happens,” said Kathleen Golde, BLT associate artistic director. She added that they were committed to keeping the actors they previously cast employed. “Machine Stops,” was originally performed by BLT... more

Lake View resident pens first children’s book

[photo1]Melvin Neal Edwards was enjoying an afternoon at the Buffalo Wing Festival with his grandson, Anthony, when the four-year-old tugged on his hand and asked to be told a story.“So I made one up on the spot,” said Edwards, from Lake View. As Edwards began telling his grandson a tale about a family of bears, the idea expanded in his mind and took on new meaning. Inspired, Edwards recently authored his first children’s book, “The Three Picnic Bears,” which can be found online at Amazon and Barnes and Noble’s websites.Though Edwards never thought about writing a book, it was an aspiration of his late wife, Felicia.“She always wanted to write a children’s book,” said Edwards, who noted she was... more

Fresh twist to an old play

[photo1]A group of tenth graders at Hamburg High School donned costumes and glanced over scripts before taking the stage in the auditorium. Yet these students were not members of the school’s musical or drama club. Rather, they were completing an innovative project for their English class. Looking for a new way to make Shakespeare’s works exciting and relatable, Teachers Nicole Lesinski and Scott Weidmann turned their unit on “Othello” into a movie project, where students are asked to modernize the script and then are filmed acting out various scenes from the play. “We had taught ‘Othello’ in the classroom the traditional way for a few years,” Weidmann said. Yet the students were not connecting... more
