Letter to the Editor: Thank you to local emergency crews

Words cannot express how grateful I am that we have a fantastic emergency squad in our town of Boston.

On Sept. 9th, I was sitting in my backyard with my son Ken, chatting away, when all of a sudden a four-wheeler was coming across the road and into my backyard.

We looked and knew it was my oldest son’s four-wheeler, but didn’t recognize the driver until he said, “Help.”

Here it was, my oldest son Andy, who just got stung by a bee in the woods. He has never had a reaction to a sting in his 40 years. We honestly did not recognize his face that was totally blow up and rippled like a bulldog face.

All he could say was, “I can’t breath and my chest is tight.” I immediately called Hamburg Fire Control and got fast response, thanks to dispatch Hilliard.

I myself am a lifetime member of the Boston Emergency Squad and still teach EMT in Erie County. I felt helpless when Andy’s airway was closing off, but prepared myself to do whatever happened next.

I was glad to hear BES was responding but then, when I heard Paramedic Chris Zemrac responding from the village of Hamburg, my heart felt big relief.

I then prayed that no cop would stop Chris for a speeding ticket. This is true dedication on Chris’s part to respond that far, for a life-threatening emergency. Thank you so much, Chris, and to the whole crew of BES.

I believe all our EMS personnel are God’s flying angels, with a first aid pack upon their backs.

Anyone who has an interest in joining our Boston emergency squad should go for it. Our members will help you get the training you need and guide you every step of the way. It is a rewarding experience to try and help save a life.

For more information, just call the squad hall at 941-5313 and leave a message.
