The Sun letter to the editor: Hamburg Town Board is at a crossroads

We have two new members to our town board. Cheryl Potter-Juda and Mike Quinn ran to make a difference.

For the past four years at least, our town board has demonstrated dysfunction. Town board meetings were chaotic. These newcomers won, because the voters wanted improvement in their representation.

We are at a crossroads with our new representatives. At the reorganization meeting, 58 of the original 60 resolutions were passed. Ms. Potter-Juda asked to table a last-minute resolution until she had time to read it. “Sign it, stupid!” screamed someone from the audience. “Give us time to work with each other,” asked Councilman Quinn. “I want the floor,” screamed Tom Best. “We need a leader, Steve; you must like chaos.”

This was the behavior of the past four – eight years.

The voters of Hamburg voted for change, this past election, and the new Democratic board members are making good on their promise. Change is never easy, and as Councilman Quinn stated at the reorganization meeting, “This will be a bumpy road for a while.”

The primary objective of the new councilpeople appears to be to reduce the cost of government and realize significant tax relief. The elimination of costly contracts and stipends is the first step in achieving this goal. Reviewing existing operations and contracts should be the next step.

I have attended the town board meetings and observed that most of the residents speaking are Republican committee people who asked their questions from cue cards, not their heart. The tone of the questions was angry, vulgar, primarily attacks on the new council members, not issues.

It is time to end these political attacks and return Hamburg’s image to “the town that friendship built.” Let’s move forward and work towards a better Hamburg for all residents.
