The Sun letter to the editor: Local Warm the Children launches

As Old Man Winter makes his way to Western New York in fits and starts, swinging from sunshine and mild temperatures to the drizzly cold days of autumn, many local children would go unprepared for cold and snow, without the compassion of the readers of The Sun, who have stepped up to help families in need for almost two decades.

Thanks to the generosity of donors who contribute to Warm the Children, numerous local families throughout the Southtowns will have the opportunity to shop for brand new, warm clothing at Target Department Store in Orchard Park.

In its 18th year based in Hamburg, the Warm the Children Program kicks off this week, to help youngsters in Hamburg, Angola, Blasdell, Derby, Boston, Eden, North Collins, Lake View, Evans and Brant.

Since 2007, the program has been sponsored and coordinated by the Rotary Club of Hamburg, which collects and distributes donated funds to buy clothing for families who have been referred by local schools, churches and social agencies.

Each child accepted into the program receives brand-new clothing, which parents select with the help of volunteer shoppers who accompany them to the Target store.

Children age birth – 3 years receive $40 worth of new clothing, while those age 4 – 18 receive $80 worth.

Warm the Children organizers ask that donors consider sponsoring a child or children, by making a donation of $40 for a younger child or of $80 for an older child, or perhaps by making a combined amount such as $120 for a younger and older child.

Last year, over 300 children in The Sun circulation area received warm winter clothing, through the Warm the Children program.

Partners in the program include The Sun, which donates free advertising used to solicit and acknowledge contributions from its readership, and Evans Bank, serving as the program’s fiscal partner. Integral to the success of Warm the Children is the over 100 community volunteers who serve as shoppers.

“Every cent donated to Warm the Children goes toward the purchase of children’s clothing. There are no administrative costs, as Hamburg Rotary members do all coordination with assistance from Evans Bank,” reports Liz Angelbeck, a member of Hamburg Rotary, who helps coordinate the program.

Volunteer shoppers report the experience of helping families select their new clothing is a rewarding one for them, as well as for the children and their grateful parents. The need continues to persist, with the continuing decline in the nation’s economy.

Donations are now being gratefully accepted. To donate, please make checks payable to Warm the Children and sent to Evans Bank, 5999 South Park Ave., Hamburg, NY 14075. If you would like to be a volunteer shopper this year, contact Liz at
