The Sun letter to the editor: A spotlight on physical therapy

Editor:
October is national physical therapy month, a time to shine the spotlight on those medical professionals who help facilitate healing, improve mobility, reduce pain and return individuals to their normal level of activity following an injury or illness.

On your first visit to a physical therapy office, you will be examined by a physical therapist to access your injury and educate you regarding your condition.

A plan of care will be developed around your individualized needs. Your treatment may include stretching and/or strengthening exercises, modalities (such as ultrasound or heat/ice), hands-on manual stretching/mobilizations or tool-assisted massage (such as ASTYM). A home exercise program is commonly given to speed up recovery.

During your course of treatments, periodic progress reports will be performed to gauge your progress.

Physical therapists can help with musculoskeletal injuries, neurological problems, vertigo (dizziness), poor balance and much more. People do not want surgery or injections, if they can avoid it. Physical therapy is a safe, conservative approach in getting the patient better.

And, thanks to Direct Access, patients can now visit a licensed physical therapist without a prescription from a physician. Individuals can go directly to a PT for evaluation and treatment and can be seen up to 10 times over a 30-day period. This is ideal for most musculoskeletal pain or injuries that require a conservative approach.

So, the next time life’s circumstances require the services of a physical therapist, do a little research, talk to your family and friends and reach out to a trained physical therapist for assistance. Their ultimate goal is to help you achieve independence and return to full function!
