The Sun letter to the editor: Another viewpoint about the Hamburg Town Board

What is evident from the continuing dysfunction of the town board is that downsizing is not working.

The problems plaguing the current board are the same as its predecessor except that, as far as the supervisor is concerned, the shoe is on the other foot.

Due to limitations imposed by the Open Meetings Law, communication among board members is hampered, since dialogue between two board members would technically be a violation of the law. Furthermore, for a town of our size, a three-person board inhibits the ability of citizens to direct contact board members about relevant issues, due to limitations on time and availability.

Attendance has increased significantly, since I began attending town board meetings regularly. This is a good development. However, I think it is disingenuous to accuse only the new board members of disrespect.

Mutual respect is the basis for cooperation, communication and real progress, and this applies to the audience, as well as the board.

On more than one occasion during the tenure of the prior board, when the situation seemed out of control, Supervisor Walters would bang his gavel and call for order. Has the supervisor misplaced the gavel? Is he not the one with the responsibility to maintain order?

Citizens deserve better from all levels of government, from town hall to Albany to Washington.

However, we cannot abrogate our responsibilities. We must exercise the right to vote, protect every citizen’s right to vote in fair and honest elections, remove the taint of big money from politics that has grown astronomically since the Citizens United decision, and hold our elected representatives to a high standard of integrity.

We have the numbers. We have the votes. Do we have the will?
