Letter to the editor: Firefighters, police should be honored separately from veterans

Editor:

True definition of Memorial Day: It is a federal holiday in the United States of America for remembering men and women who died, while serving in our country’s armed services.

Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the Civil War. To remember soldiers who died during the Civil War, Memorial Day was extended to honor all Americans who died during military service.

Memorial Day is for veterans. Yes, as a veteran, one of many in the town of Evans, we were very upset. [We have collected] a number of signatures to attest to this.

This is not meant to slight firefighters, policemen or 911, as they are all heroes. But the day to remember them should be separate.
