The Sun letter to the editor: Response to The Sun Blasdell letter

Editor:
I read the letter to the editor, “Blasdell: the forgotten village in Hamburg” (Oct. 17, 2013), written by Deputy Mayor Lou McDonald, with interest.

I am compelled to remind Mr. McDonald that, many weeks ago, he was advised that, as the subject railroad crossing was wholly within the municipal parameters of the village of Blasdell, village officials must initiate the request for a quiet zone and, thereafter, must assume the status of lead agency for purposes of the proposed project.

He was assured that town officials, employees and volunteers would provide any and all assistance necessary to navigate through this arduous process.

Further, Mr. McDonald well knows that some $400,000 in funding for infrastructure improvements was obtained through town efforts in the last four years, totaling nearly $1 million over the last eight years.

Moreover, a new shelter was built at the Silver Street playground for the use and enjoyment of Blasdell residents, and a facility for a recreation center was provided by the town of Hamburg, when the county closed the Blasdell library. All administrative services for the village of Blasdell recreation programs are provided by the town’s youth, recreation and senior department. This department also maintains the Blasdell senior meal programs.

Town of Hamburg officials successfully sought out an investor to redevelop the Lake Avenue Plaza, took the initiative to rescue Woodlawn Beach from closure and created the Lake Erie Commerce Center, all of which contributed to the revitalization and stabilization of the village of Blasdell.

Rest assured, Mr. McDonald, the commitment by the town of Hamburg to the Village of Blasdell, be it in economic development, infrastructure improvement or quality of life issues, continues full time and year-round.
