The Sun letter to the editor: School board: what were you elected for?

Editor:

This morning, in the Buffalo News, again, there is an article regarding the dysfunction of our Hamburg Central School Board. Do you not see the sign, when you enter the village and town, “Hamburg, the Town That Friendship Built.”

Did all of these elective officials forget why they are there? They are there for the betterment of our schools, teachers and most of our students.

They are not their for their egos. They are not there so their names and arguments can be read almost weekly in the newspapers. If they really cared so much for the school, the students, the curriculums offered, as all of them claimed when they were campaigning, they should all resign for the betterment of Hamburg Central, and run again in the May elections. If they regain their seats on the board, so be it.

If not, walk away, quit suing so we, the taxpayers, will not have to pay for lawsuits instead of good education.

The officials are acting like children, grabbing the gavel out of another board member’s hand and banging it so hard it breaks, lawsuits against who said what in private sessions, police being called because a board member will not leave the premises. Another hearing process that could cost the district $250,000 or more.

All these lawsuits cost us, the taxpayers, thousands and thousands of dollars. Dollars that could be spent saving a teacher’s job, or a sport or a class. So what were you elected for?
