The Sun letter to the editor: Nominate a solder for hometown heroes

Hamburg Hometown Heros banner project is about to embark on its third year in the spring of 2014, phase two: honoring Vietnam vets from Feb. 28th, 1961 – May 7th, 1975.

These are Vietnam veterans who were on ship or in country and received a Vietnam service metal and are or were a Hamburg resident. Applications are available at village and town hall. We are still accepting applicants from Hamburg residents who are or were in an active war zone from Sept. 11, 2001, also.

Applications are taken on a first-come basis and accepted in the order they are received, as long as they meet all the criteria. If qualify, they will be notified to submit a good quality picture in uniform.

Thirty-seven banners will be hung around April 1.

Honoring our local Hamburg hometown heros, the past two years, who have served in an active war zone since Sept. 11, 2001, has been a great success.

It’s our town’s way of saying thank you for their service and their sacrifice for our country.

There has been so much positive feedback from the residents from the village and town of Hamburg; the soldiers’ family, friends and neighbors.

This April, before the first set were taken down, it was recommended that the families carry their loved one’s banner proudly, in the Hamburg memorial parade. It was a great success, with residents’ clapping as we all marched down the road, so proudly displaying our loved one’s banner.

After the parade, some of those banners were adopted by local restaurants and businesses, down more at eye level, before they are given back to the families as a keepsake. The places that adopted them made a donation in any amount, to help continue supporting us and helping us continue this great tribute.

The banners are no cost to the families. So far, the banner project has been getting donations in all amounts, from private individuals, businesses, churches, local groups. All of this support is extremely appreciated and needed, to make it a continuing success for years to come.

We can not forget what our soldiers have done, as a sacrifice to our country.
