The Sun letter to the editor: Give Woodlawn Beach back to the state

A few years ago, New York state turned over ownership of Woodlawn Beach State Park to the town of Hamburg. Looking at the statement of operations for the past two years, this transaction has proven to be very beneficial to New York state and very costly to the town of Hamburg’s taxpayers.

In 2011, the revenue was $168,278 and expenses were $192,980. That’s a net loss of $24,702.

In 2012, revenue rose to $277,589 and expenses increased to $320,031. That’s a net loss $42,442: a total net loss of $67,144 in the first two years.

Is this a start to a trend? What could add to this trend is the fact that New York state purchased Gallagher Beach and the small boat harbor – both within 1 mile of Woodlawn Beach – and neither will charge an entrance fee.

If Woodlawn Beach stops charging an entrance fee, the result will be an even larger deficit and a greater tax burden upon the residents of Hamburg. The town of Hamburg cannot afford year after year of growing deficits.

It’s time for Supervisor Walters to return Woodlawn Beach back to New York state.
