The Sun letter to the editor: Thank you for fashion show turnout

On Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, under the leadership of Nicole Dayka and Lisa Ruszczka, our core team of Sharon Oddo, Elaine Hayden, Linda Eichhorn and myself hosted a sold-out third annual Kathleen Mary House fashion show. The Kathleen Mary House is a unique, transitional home in the Southtowns for women and their children that are victims of domestic violence.

The fashion show brings local awareness and attention of the ongoing presence of domestic violence in our community and it serves as a symbol of hope for those who struggle with violence at the hands of those they love.

A wonderful afternoon began with our master of ceremonies, Legislator Lynne Dixon, welcoming the full house of guests in attendance.

Our special guest speaker was one of the moms that resides at the Kathleen Mary House. This young mom shared her story of a life of domestic abuse. Pregnant with two children in tow, she was scared and broken, with nowhere to go. Fighting back tears, she spoke of the safe nurturing environment she and her children have had, since arriving at the KMH four months ago.

Sharon Wroblewski, house director, and Donna Braunscheidel, assistant director, wrapped their arms around this family and set the wheels in motion. This family now has a chance for a new beginning.

The inner beauty of our community shined through, as the 19 models took to the runway, where fashion, awareness and education meet. The audience and vendors applauded, while each local model strutted the runway with exciting new styles and fashions from Gap, Gap Kids and Dress Barn.

Without each and every one of you, the mission of the Kathleen Mary House to provide new beginnings for moms and their children would not be possible, year after year.

Thank you, to the many guests, sponsors, models, volunteers and vendors, and to the generosity of many businesses and individuals from our community that contributed products and services, purchased tickets, donated items and made baskets to be raffled off. Thank you, to the stores who kindly offered their clothing for our models.

The Kathleen Mary House and our committee extends our sincere gratitude to everyone for making this a fantastic event. You made this show so much more than we could have ever imagined.

With your love and support, the KMH can continue to offer hope for the future and enable these moms and their children to walk out of the darkness of domestic violence. We hope to see you all at the next KMH fashion show in October 2014!
