The Sun letter to the editor: It is time to defend public education

At a rally on March 7, 2014 in downtown Buffalo, Sen. Grisanti stood united with senators Tim Kennedy (D) and George Maziarz (R) and Assemblyman Ryan (D) and Assemblyman Ceretto (R).

These New York state representatives promised to stand up and defend public education. They chanted with the crowd, giving hope to all that funding for public education might be realized.

Unfortunately, four days later, senators Grisanti and Maziarz supported a budget resolution that did quite the opposite. The resolution further decreased funding for public education, subsidized education privatizers and provided tax cuts to corporations and the wealthy.

As this is unacceptable for public education, parents and teachers held a protest in front of Sen. Grisanti’s office on March 21st, urging him to reconsider his position and honor his commitment to support public education.

Representatives at the protest included parents and teachers from the Lake Shore Central School District, Hamburg School District, Ken-Ton School District and East Aurora School District, among others.

Sen. Grisanti was neither present at the protest, nor did he send a representative to speak with the delegation.

They intended on asking him to commit to full funding of public schools, to oppose voucher proposals which take funds from public schools and to oppose the governor’s property tax freeze.

No money is enough for these people! Just keep taxing, and taxing and taxing. And it still won't be enough.
