The Sun letter to the editor: Give Supervisor Steven Walters some credit

Editor:
As the president of the Hamburg CSEA Blue Collar Union at the time of the single health care negotiations, I have an entirely different perspective than our current president.

Being the representative of our union who was at the negotiations, it is my opinion that the Town Supervisor Steve Walters needs credit, as well.

When he took office, negotiations had come to a standstill. To kick-start them back up, the supervisor allowed the unions to select a new consultant. That simple step completely changed the tenor of the dialogue and ultimately, through the hard work of both sides, a deal was able to be worked out. I also personally witnessed, on a number of occasions, Supervisor Walters’ commending the unions for working with the town, both publicly and in various newspaper articles.

It is unfortunate that the current leader of our union, someone who was not intimately involved in the negotiations for the single health care plan, would make such statements without even talking to the people who were involved.

This is a positive thing that was accomplished for the town of Hamburg and there is no reason to try and turn it into a negative.
