The definition of perseverance is steadfast in doing something, despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.
This word comes to my mind while thinking of the situation in the Hamburg Central School District. My family moved into the village recently and my daughter attends the high school.
To say her year was filled with dedicated professionals who worked with her is an understatement. From the secretaries to the counselors to the teachers to the administrators, everyone went above and beyond to make sure our daughter succeeded at Hamburg High School. She is currently involved in a Bulldog athletic bootcamp that is top-notch. The coaches have brought in professionals from the community to work with the students to make the camp enjoyable and worthwhile.
I have found, as a parent, that the Hamburg High School staff is available and will go out of their way to help the students.
I am also a retired elementary school counselor in the district, having worked at Charlotte Avenue Elementary and Union Pleasant Elementary Schools for a total of 19 years. Hamburg was a pioneer in many programs, including having elementary school counselors, participating in the Character Council of WNY and starting the family support center. At the elementary level, there are so many dedicated, caring teachers and staff members working every day to help the children succeed. The parents in the district also are highly invested in the educational process.
We need to not lose sight of all the amazing assets this district provides. The backbone of this educational system is the dedicated hard-workers, the children and the parents. We need to support one another and remember that, despite some serious turmoil for several years now, Hamburg has many, many assets.
We can persevere. We need to not lose sight of the true purpose of our district - to educate and support our children.
