Hi everyone, it’s your Erie County dairy princess, Nicole Achtyl, writing to say happy holidays and I hope you have a happy “moo” year.
The New Year always brings new resolutions that we set for ourselves. One of the most common resolutions is to be healthier or to be more fit, in the New Year.
Well, I have a great way to for you to bring healthier foods into your diet: dairy products. Things like yogurt come in so many different choices in favor and style.
Yogurt has active, good bacteria in it that your digestive system needs, to support its health. Yogurt is a product of milk, so you get all of the great benefits that it offers.
These include calcium, which is the most popularly known nutrient in milk. This helps to build and keep teeth and bones strong.
Another is potassium, which helps regulate the body’s fluid balance and maintain normal blood pressure. It is also needed for muscle activity and contraction so, for any workouts you do, your yogurt will be helping to push your muscles to get that extra sit-up or 10th of a mile.
It also includes phosphorus, that helps strengthen bones and generate energy in the body’s cells.
There is also protein in milk and cheese, which builds and repairs muscle tissue and serves as a source of energy. This is great for working on your new biceps.
Vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin. Now, I know the weather has been less than ideal for any of us that love the summer sunshine, like myself, but we can get some of our much-needed vitamin D from dairy products, to help the absorption of calcium and strengthen our bones even more.
We also need the vitamin A dairy products provide, to help maintain normal vision and skin.
Also included is vitamin B12, which helps maintain healthy red blood cells and nerve cells.
Riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2, helps convert food into energy the body can use. It’s also important for normal eyesight and healthy skin.
Last, but not least, niacin, to help bodies digest sugars and fatty acids.
With all of these great benefits that come from dairy products, how could you not want to add them to your diet?
There are so many low-fat choices as well in yogurts, cheeses, milk and ice creams, it’s hard to pass up.
I encourage you to add dairy to your healthier you, in your 2014 resolutions.
Remember three every day, for your dairy to have your balanced daily diet.
