DeSales Catholic School is pleased to announce through the generosity of several local businesses and the schoolís faculty members, the Rachelís Challenge program will be presented in Lockport next month.
Rachelís Challenge exists to equip and inspire individuals to replace acts of violence, bullying and negativity with acts of respect, kindness and compassion. Rachelís Challenge is based on the life and writings of Rachel Joy Scott who was the first victim of the Columbine school shootings in 1999. Through her example, Rachelís Challenge is making a positive impact in the lives of millions of people every year.
On Thursday, DeSales Catholic School students will participate in grade level appropriate assemblies during the morning. In the afternoon, seventh and eighth grade students will participate in leadership training, and younger students will gather to work on community outreach projects.
At 7 p.m., there will be a free program open to parents and community members at the Palace Theatre on East Avenue in Lockport. The community event introduces Rachel and her inspiring story using examples from her life and writings, and shows the profound positive impact we have on those around us. It demonstrates to the listener the power of deliberately reaching out to others to start what Rachel called a chain reaction of kindness and compassion.
More than 2,200 schools in the United States and abroad have held Rachelís Challenge events. Results of the programs have included decreased numbers of discipline referrals, an increase in students intervening in bullying situations and an increased belief by students that their school is a safer place. Each school assembly closes with real-world challenges for the students, and an opportunity for students and staff to sign a banner making a commitment to accept the challenges put forth in the program.
This banner will be prominently displayed at DeSales throughout the school year.
Rachelís Challenge is being provided to our community through the generosity of Mullane Motors, Lockport Dental Group, Divita and Tracey, CPA and the faculty and staff of DeSales Catholic School.
