SOUTH BUFFALO - In its ever continuing effort to combine nature, art and beauty in our area, the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens is offering art classes for adults and children alike. Offering multi-medium classes taught by local artist Joan Saba, an art project is completed in each weekly class.
Sited inside the Botanical Gardens or at the annexed administration building, the Gardens offer an ideally inspirational setting for artists of all ages.
Children are invited on Saturday mornings to partake in the art classes from 9 am to 10:30 am with Joan Saba, who moves between the two buildings depending on the week’s medium and project type.
The cost is $11 per class or $30 per session and are geared toward children ages 5 to 15 yrs of age. The cost includes the supplies for each week.
A recent week’s project found a group of kids from Buffalo, Hamburg and Cheektowaga working on a quilling project. Quilling, an art form involving arranging rolled strips of paper into three dimensional designs, was explained by Artist Joan Saba to the children who quickly went to work on their snowflake design projects.
There is a variety of ages and experience levels in the children’s classes. Some children have taken several sessions of classes, while others were attending their first art lesson. Artist Joan Saba displayed patience and talent working with the children and varying her teachings to their various levels and abilities.
Bailey Boyer from the Sloan/Cheektowaga area was attending her first session of classes.
“I really like art and have taken classes at school and worked on things at home, but this is the first time I’m taking actual classes,” said 11-year-old Bailey, who is interested in art forms of all types and has previously tried several mediums on her own including leather stamping.
Her instinctive artistic ability was evident as she quickly took to her quilling project.
“I’ve taken classes here before and I like when we do watercolors,” said 7-year-old Natalie Evans, “After last year’s class I brought my hot air balloon water color picture to school and won a VIP award for the week,” she added proudly.
Nadine Smith, age 9, was similarly eager to talk about the past classes she has taken.
“We sometimes go into the Botanical Gardens and run around and explore it. Then we get to come back to the art area and draw our favorite part of what we saw,” Nadine explained excitedly.
Adult classes can sometimes find the participants set up in the Botanical Gardens with easels with the flow of natural sunlight streaming through the skylight windows of the Gardens as the art students work on their drawing or painting projects. Adult classes are available on Monday mornings from 8:45 to 10:30 am and both novice and veteran artists are invited to attend.
The cost is $54 per series or $15 per class for Botanical Gardens members and $60 per series or $16 per class for non-members. For a list of suggested supplies call 827-1584 ext. 291.
Each art class can be taken independently or you can join a full session. Session dates for all classes can be found at www.buffalogardens.com, or by visiting the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens at 2655 South Park Avenue, Buffalo for further information.
