Proposed Dollar Tree site in Farnham
Upon further research, it was found that there is over $164,000 in back taxes owed on the proposed site of the new Dollar General in the Village of Farnham.
Luckily for Farnham, they are not responsible for paying that sum, according to Village Mayor Julie Ann Gibbons, who said the village is not on the hook for the large sum at the Farnham Village Board’s Jan. 15 meeting.
“Researching and finding a number of past tax bills gave us some insight into where we were with the property,” Gibbons said. “We were under the impression that the property was exempt, which goes back to when the property was sold to the village in 2005. There had been some questions as far as whether or not there were, as part of that sale, back taxes on the property prior to it being turned over the Village. Yes, there were back taxes owed on that property.”
The back taxes total a whopping $164,605.88, but Gibbons said that amount was waived when the village came into possession of the property. It doesn’t mean, however, that the village completely pays nothing.
“The village does not owe that amount on the property,” she said. “It was arranged, when the property was sold to the village, that upon sale of the property by the village to a third party that one-half of the sale price has to be paid to the Erie Country Tax Certificate Corporation.”
The sale price of the land is $47,000, so the village could owe Erie County up to $23,500 of the sale.
“We still stand to profit from the sale,” she said. “It’s still a beneficial deal for us, and owing this money isn’t exactly what I see as a deal breaker because no matter when the property would have been sold, that amount would still be due. The village still stands to gain by selling this property because it will be placed back on the tax rolls. We still stand to profit with this sale, because not only with we have at least $23,500 from sale but we will also have a new business here.”
It was also announced that while preliminary sketches exist, the Village is waiting for an official site plan for the property. It was also said that Dollar General developers are looking to have duel entry points to the store, onto both Route 5 and Commercial Street.
Any residents with comments, questions or concerns regarding the proposed Dollar General are urged to attend the next Farnham Village Board meeting, set to take place Tuesday, Feb. 19.
