Obituaries for the week of November 25, 2010

Leila McBride

A funeral service was held on Thursday (Nov. 18) from the Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home in Hamburg for Leila C. McBride of Hamburg, who died on Tuesday, November 16, 2010.

She is survived by her children, Cheryl, Dennis (Kathy) and Colleen (Peter) McBride; grandchildren, Christine (Keith) Ryan, James McBride and Valerie Gauthier; great-grandchildren, Jonathan McBride and Mackenzie Ryan; sister, Mae Vana; sister-in-law, Margaret Altherr; friend, Carol Nall; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, James E. McBride Jr.; parents, Albert and Christina Altherr; and siblings, Herbert, Homer and Harold Altherr, Alberta Boggs, Marcella King, Emilee Kahler and Rosemary Beckwith.

Mrs. McBride was a graduate of Woodlawn High School and served honorably in the U.S. Coast Guard in World War II. She was stationed in Florida, Washington D.C. and New York City and was featured on Coast Guard Recruitment Posters.

Dorothy Weigel

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday (Nov. 20) from Our Mother of Good Counsel Church for Dorothy J. (Carlin) Weigel of Blasdell, who died on Wednesday, November 17, 2010.

She is survived by her children, James (Patricia), Gary, Joanne (Kerry), Courtney and Eric (Nadine) Weigel, Carol (Timothy) Duggan, Doreen (Wayne) Cole and  Anne (John) Ingoldsby; siblings, Joseph (Arthura) and Jim (Helen) Carlin, Margaret Saunders, Marie (late Gerald) Buck and Rita (late Henry) Powhat; 24 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Richard J. Weigel; and siblings, Helen (late James) Cummings, Anne (late Warren) Schmidt, Therese (late Emerson) Smith, Thomas (late Carol) and John Carlin.
She was interred in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Arrangements were made through the John J. Kaczor Funeral Home.


Mary Ellis

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday (Nov. 19) from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Orchard Park for Mary A. Ellis, 60, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Angola, who died on Monday, November 15, 2010.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Ellis; children, Kimberly (John) Artmeier and Michael (Tina Dorsheimer) Ellis; grandchildren, Abby, Christopher and Spencer Artmeier and Sidney, Samantha, Sara and Brooke Ellis.

She was predeceased by her son, Richard Ellis Jr.

Mrs. Ellis worked as a licensed hairdresser and licensed practical nurse.
She was interred in Lakeside Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.

Arrangements were made through the Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home.


Robert Pattison

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 24 at 5 p.m. from the Wentland Funeral Home in North Collins for Robert Pattison, 61, of Fillmore and formerly of Lake View, who died on Friday, November 19, 2010.

He is survived by his children, Kathy Gilson, Larry (Amy Jacobs) and Robert Pattison; grandchildren, Kylie, Samantha, Brett, Stephanie and Serenity; great-granddaughter, Brooklynn; siblings, George and Rick Pattison, Nancy (Bob) Bernhard, Sandy (Mike) Reilly and Candy (Randy) Snyder; and companion, Barbara Allan.

He was predeceased by his parents, Carlton and Barbara (Barris) Pattison.

Mr. Pattison was a retiree from the Town of Hamburg Building and Grounds Department, a member of the Sons of Legion and an exempt member of the Lake View Fire Department.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Buffalo or Mercy Hospital.


Maureen O’Brien

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday (Nov. 23) from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Lake View for Maureen E. O’Brien, 71, formerly of Hamburg, who died on Thursday, November 18, 2010.

She is survived by her siblings, Kathleen (late Peter) Walters, Terrance (Lavon) and Mary O’Brien; and many nieces and nephews.

Ms. O’Brien was a former teacher for the City of Buffalo Public Schools.

She was interred in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Arrangements were made through the Donald M. Demmerley Funeral Home.


Mary Eckhardt

A funeral service was held on Monday (Nov. 22) from the Laing Funeral Home in Eden for Mary Eunice (Nelson) Eckhardt, 90, of Greendale, Wis., formerly of Eden, who died on Wednesday, November 17, 2010.

She is survived by her children, Joan (Richard) Ziehl, Marsha (Robert) Gifford, Gary (Sharon) Eckhardt and Mark (Linda) Eckhardt; sister, Margaret (Nelson) Robertson; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Charles Eckhardt; parents, Hunter Grant and Mary Elizabeth (Pace) Nelson; and siblings, Herman, Amos, Marcus, T. Alton, David and Ruth Nelson.

Mrs. Eckhardt graduated from Erie Community College in 1983 with an Associates in Arts degree and at State University of New York, College at Buffalo in 1986 with a bachelor of arts.

She enjoyed flower gardening, following the National Football League teams Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers, learning later in life at college, baking and anything involving her children and grandchildren.
She was interred in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to any learning institute of choice to support education.


Norman Spengler

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 10 a.m. from Epiphany of Out Lord Church in Langford for Norman J. Spengler, 78, of Lawtons, who died on Thursday, November 18, 2010.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Jensen) Spengler; children, Lori Spengler and Lisa (Wayne) Steff; grandchildren, Ian, Eric, Levi, Amanda (Steve) and Molly; siblings, Leo (Maxine) and Lester (late Eleanor) Spengler, Joan Warner, Jean (Richard) Jensen and Patricia Langless; and daughter-in-law, Cheryl Spengler.

He was predeceased by his son, Jeffrey Spengler; and siblings, Mary (Sylvester) Bauer and Martin Spengler.

Mr. Spengler was a life member of the William R. Dils VFW Post No. 199 in North Collins, Gowanda Legion Post No. 409, the DAV and the Collins Conservation Club.

Memorial contributions may be made to the North Collins Emergency Squad, Lawtons Volunteer Fire Department or the Collins Conservation Club.

Arrangements were made through the Wentland Funeral Home.


Edna Lilga

A funeral service was held on Sunday (Nov. 21) from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Eden for Edna Caroline Lilga, 97, of Eden, who died on Wednesday, November 17, 2010.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Irene Lilga; nieces and nephews, Marian (Charles) Crowder, James and Robert (Bonnie) Cohoon, Donald (Sharon) Lilga, Patricia (Daniel) Heather, Ruth (David) Ranke and Nancy (Frank) McIlvaine; 11 great-nieces and nephews and 13 great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, Fred and Julia (Henry) Lilga; and siblings, Laura Cohoon, Alton, Chester and Clarence Lilga.

Ms. Lilga graduated from Hamburg High School in 1933. She attended Bryant and Stratton College and completed her education in 1942. She worked at Blue Cross/Blue Shield, where she retired after 29 years of service.

She enjoyed traveling all around the world, but her favorite place to be was home. Her hobbies included baking her famous cookies, crocheting, cross country skiing and caring for her gladiolus. Her family and friends were most important to her.

She was interred in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 3487 Boston Road, Eden, NY 14057.
Arrangements were made through the Laing Funeral Home.


Ronald Ryan

Funeral services were held on Saturday (Nov. 20) from the Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home in Hamburg for Ronald E. Ryan of Derby, who died on Wednesday, November 17, 2010.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine (Kern) Ryan; children, Colleen (Joseph) Sliz, Keith (Christine) Ryan and Nicole Kilger; granddaughter, Mackenzie; brother, Norbert Ryan; and nieces and nephews.

Doris Palmer

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday (Nov. 22) from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Lake View for Doris E. (Schillig) Palmer of Lake View, who died on Thursday, November 18, 2010.

She is survived by her children, John (Rose Marie) Palmer, Gloria (James) Tatar, AnnMarie Dispenza and Linda Blaser; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Edna Pauly, Mary Campbell, Rita Gibbons and Donald Schillig.
Mrs. Palmer celebrated her 100th birthday in September with a party at Elderwood Health Care at Lakewood.

She was interred in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Town of Hamburg Lions Club.

Arrangements were made through the Donald M. Demmerley Funeral Home.


Helen Garland

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 26 at 10 a.m. from The First Congregational United Church of Christ for Helen S. (Shultz) Garland, 90, of Angola, who died on Monday, November 22, 2010.

She is survived by loving son figure, Philip (Roseann) VanKoughnet; and cousins, Barry McRae, Susan (Brian) Kellogg, Carol (James) Freer and Dianne Gilligan.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon E. Garland; and parents, Clarence and Jessie (Waterman) Shultz.

Mrs. Garland was a member of the O.E.S. Angola Chapter 184, servings as Past Matron, Chaplin and Grand Chaplin.

She work for the Lake Shore Central School District for 52 years and served on the Lake Shore School Board for 10 years.

Interment will be in the Forest Avenue Cemetery and arrangements were made through the Addison Funeral Home.


Rosa Fatta

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday (Nov. 22) from Our Lady of Victory Basilica for Rosa (Cerami) Fatta of Lake View, who died on Thursday, November 18, 2010.

She is survived by her children, Joseph (Patricia) Fatta and Mary Miller; grandchildren, Rosanne (Bob) Schaller, Jacob Miller, Ron (Joy), Nicholas, Valerie and Nicola Fatta; siblings, Anna, Concetta, Pina and Maria (Gina) Cerami; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Nicola Fatta.

Memorials may be made to the Baker Victory Services.

She was interred in Holy Cross Cemetery and arrangements were made through the Lakeside Memorial Funeral Home.


Kenzie Marsh-Dommell

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 11 a.m. from the Addison Funeral Home in Angola for Kenzie L. Marsh-Dommell of Irving, who died on Saturday, November 20, 2010.

She is survived by her parents, Neil Dommell and Kate Marsh; siblings, Sidney and Christopher; grandparents, Kathy and Peter Marsh, Carol Dommell and Miles (Cindy) Dommell; and uncles and aunt, Tim (Kristen) Parsell and Eric Marsh.


Francis Stapell

Word has been received that Francis R. Stapell of Hyde Park died on Thursday, November 11, 2010.
He is survived by his children, Patricia Flintosh and Michael Stapell; grandchildren, Nicole and Gretchen Flintosh, Ashley Stapell and Jeremy Peterson; and great-grandchildren, Hudson and Madeline Flintosh-Kozak.

He was predeceased by his wife, Frances M. (Petrie) Stapell; parents, William and Agnes (Connelly) Stapell; and his five siblings.

Mr. Stapell served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 during World War II and was stationed in England and France. He was a member of the VFW in Poughkeepsie.

He worked for the Town of Hamburg Highway Department for over 25 years.

He was interred in St. Peter’s Masoluem.


Arlene Carrow

A memorial service will be held at a future date for Arlene E. Carrow of Hamburg, who died on Sunday, November 21, 2010.

She is survived by her sister, Elaine Carrow; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Doris (Slade) Carrow; and siblings, Dale and Charles “Butch” Carrow, Linda Stuart and Lois Muscato.

Arrangements were made through Loomis, Offers and Loomis Funeral Home.


Stephen Mayer

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wedneseday, Nov. 24 at 11:45 a.m. from Our Mother Of Good Counsel Church for Stephen F. Mayer of Blasdell, who died on Saturday, November 20, 2010.

He is survived by his children, Christine (Charles) Gould, Stephen (Nancy) Mayer and Beth (Vincent) Gregoire; grandchildren, Christopher and Jeremy (Dominika) Gomoka, Matthew (Nora) Gregoire, Kristin (Benjamin) Hussong, Sarah and Stephen Mayer; and great-grandchild, Riley Gregoire.

He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor B. (Klimschot) Mayer; and siblings, John (late Pauline) Mayer and Anne Graves.

Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Gerald Bykowicz

A memorial service was held on Tuesday (Nov. 23) from the Donald M. Demmerley Funeral Home for Gerald P. Bykowicz, 67, of Hamburg, who died on Wednesday, November 17, 2010.

He is survived by his wife, Annice (Creek) Bykowicz; sons, Brian, Robert and Jeffrey Bykowicz; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, Daniel (Christine) Bykowicz.

Mr. Bykowicz was a sheet metal worker for Ruslander and Sons.
