Marilla Historical Society continues programs

ELMA - The Marilla Historical Society continued its series of programs recently with a presentation by Jerry Spinley. Spinley is a former high school history teacher and adjunct professor at the University of Buffalo.

His topic was “The War of 1812” and he proved his expertise in this area by speaking for 90 minutes without notes.

He gave the reasons for the war, information about the large battles and a very detailed section concerning the WNY involvement, including streets in Buffalo where battles happened.

He stated a surprising theory for the war about the frontiersmen from Tennessee wanting to win the war so that they could claim Canada for more land.

The presentation was followed by questions from the large number in attendance and free refreshments.

The next activity for the society will be participation in the Christmas in Marilla event from 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 8. They will have cards to be signed for soldiers and other activities in the Community Center along with a book signing with co-authors Mary Beth Serafin and Hubert Kutter
