Steven Walters' lead narrows after absentee ballots are counted

Hamburg Town Supervisor Steven Walters
HAMBURG — Incumbent Hamburg Town Supervisor Steven Walters’ lead over Walter Rooth III has narrowed, in the count of absentee ballots in the Hamburg town supervisor’s race.

Although the vote is not yet official, the Erie County Board of Elections has told The Sun that Walters received 219 absentee votes to 235 for Rooth. The margin for Rooth will not be enough to overcome Walters’ 158 vote margin. Walters’ lead is now, unofficially, 142 votes.

However, the commissioners must still re-canvass each of Hamburg’s election districts, count affidavit ballots and emergency ballots, before declaring an official winner.

That process is tentatively expected to be completed Friday.

Elections Commissioner Dennis Ward has said that there are not enough affidavit and emergency ballots for Rooth to overcome the deficit.
