Schraft endorsed by Democratic Committee

Mike Schraft, a U.S. Air Force veteran and former U.S. State Department Official, on Thursday (July 11) filed campaign petition forms for the Erie County Legislature 9th District seat. Bolstered by the endorsement of the district’s Democratic committee, Schraft, a Democrat and Hamburg resident, appeared at the Erie County Board of Elections to submit his petition.

“With well over twice the amount of required signatures it’s evident that the residents of the 9th District are looking for leadership with skills beyond appearing before a camera. Someone with real experience who can be a factor in transforming our region into the economic and family epicenter that it should be,” he said.

Schraft says he has knocked on over 2,800 doors in the district, which includes Hamburg, Blasdell, Lackawanna and parts of South Buffalo. Regarding strategy, Schraft, a political science Ph.D. candidate at UB, said “This is a grassroots campaign that requires hard work. By beating the pavement I have met and listened to thousands of residents. Hard work generates momentum, and we have it.”

During his time in the Air Force he served as a Financial Management and Comptroller Serviceman working on fiscal year budgets for base operations. In the State Department he served in Iraq, Washington D.C. and Afghanistan as a Development Officer and Senior Budget Analyst and led a team in areas of economic development, local governance and education initiatives. He says that this experience will translate to county governance. “The primary function of the Erie County Legislature is budgetary in nature. In this I have demonstrated experience and capability.” He continued, “I believe that as a county legislator I can do more. I believe opportunities exist for a legislator, regardless of party affiliation, to lead in our region’s development, particularly with regard to our unique waterfront.”

Schraft is endorsed by the Erie County Democratic Committee and the New York Working Families Party. He is also endorsed by the Building Trades Council, the Western New York C.W.A. Council, and the Western New York Stonewall Democrats. “We understand, like everyone who knows Mike's resume, that he is not a politician but a career public servant with a long record of public service already there for all to see, and that's why we're supporting him" said Erie County Democratic Committee Chairman Jeremy Zellner recently.
