A POST OFFICE? OH, FANCY THAT! — The post office that was located in the Staub Square building at 1 Buffalo St. has moved, within the building, into a newly opened shop, Fancy That! Photo by Alicia Greco.
HAMBURG — The United States Postal Service has announced that the local postal unit is now in a new location, at the same address.
The Hamburg Mail and More Contract Postal Unit, which will remain located at 1 Buffalo St., has been moved inside the Fancy That! shop in the Staub Square building.
Worried that people would not see the Hamburg postal unit and think it was closed, “we wanted to let the customers know ... it’s still in that building, but it’s just in a new location,” said UPS Spokesperson Karen Mazurkiewicz.
The difference between a CPU and a USPS location is that the CPU is contracted by the Postal Service. CPU workers are not employees of the Postal Service; people are provided and trained by the service, to help provide similar amenities.
At a contract station, the owners are given money to provide postal products and services, but the sale of said postage and services gets turned over to the postal service.
Although a CPU provides many services, it does not provide the complete extent of a regular post office, according to Mazurkiewicz.
“We think it’s very important that people know there still is a [postal] presence there, just in a different spot in a the same building,” she said.
The owners of both Fancy That! and the post office are Maryanne and William Vail. Fancy That! was a new endeavor, according to Maryanne Vale, when the couple replaced the antique shop Vintage Collectibles and Antiques. The Vails inquired within about the postal unit when they opened the gift shop, nearly a month ago.
“There’s a lot of foot traffic,” Vail said, pointing out a customer’s entering the store with a package to drop off.
She said that she hopes people who enter the store for their postal needs will look around or return, to peruse the shop.
Fancy That!’s unit provides nearly every service a traditional post office provides, with the exception of money orders. “Also, we’re really user-friendly here,” Vail said.
The Hamburg Mail and More CPU and Fancy That! are located at 1 Buffalo St. in the Staub Square building.
