Assemblyman Gabryszak helps to pass legislation to protect victims of domestic violence

Assemblyman Dennis H. Gabryszak (D, C, I – Cheektowaga) announced that the Assembly has successfully passed a package of legislation intended to assist and protect victims of domestic violence.

“Domestic violence is a problem that can affect any family,” Assemblymember Gabryszak said. “It is a state-wide concern that needed a comprehensive solution. It is a privilege to be involved in the passage of this crucial legislative package.”
The legislative package that was passed by the New York State assembly includes legislation to:

-prohibit employment discrimination against victims,

-prohibit housing discrimination by forbidding denial of right to purchase, rent, lease, or inhabit housing,

-include certain family offenses in the definition of “serious offenses,”

-require that orders of protection to be translated into the individuals native language,

-make parties who fail to obey or enforce an order of protection liable for non-economic damages,

-require hospitals to implement domestic violence policies, procedures, and training programs, and

-provide notice on orders of protection stating the victim cannot be required to violate an order nor arrested for such violation.

In New York State, approximately 450,000 reports of domestic violence occur each year. On a national scale, statistics reveal that 25% of women will experience domestic violence at least once in their lifetime and three women will be murdered each day by their partner.

“Simply being a supporter of victims of domestic violence is not adequate,” said Assemblymember Gabryszak. “It was necessary for my colleagues and I to pass legislation that will create real resources for domestic violence victims and serve to protect their families.”
