Casal resigns due to the appointment of Newton

TONAWANDA - At the recent City of Tonawanda School Board meeting Dr. James Newton was named the new Superintendent of schools.

This decision was almost unanimously supported in the room with a round of applause from board members and members of the community. The single board member to say “nay” to the decision was Lynn Casal, who left the meeting shortly after Newton took his seat - putting in her resignation.

Newton thanked all those who have been there to support him during his career as middle and high school principal and to his students, many of them in attendance due to scholar athlete recognition, he said, “I will only be down the hall.”

He will begin as superintendent on Jan. 22.

In other school board news:

It was voted that a science and math class, Living Environment and Integrated Algebra will have sections split into the span of two years instead of one for some students. Students will take their regents testing after their second year. They believe that doing this for some students will give them a higher success rate since some learn at a slower pace.

Currently there are 79 more students at Riverview Elementary than at Mullen Elementary. While they are still debating the possibility of reorganizing the district down the line, a suggestion was made to move some of the special education sections to Mullen.

If they move the Riverview Self Contained class or Universal Pre-Kindergarten class to Mullen it would give teachers extra support from those classes already at Mullen.

Board member Jennifer Mysliwy voiced her concern with moving special needs children around and just wanted to be sure it wouldn’t be too much for them.

“With the transitions for special needs kids it’s been a lot of back and forth,” said Mysliwy. “We need to look to the future so we can stop juggling these high needs students.”

All schools in the district will be practicing lockdown procedure, if an intruder were to enter the building, in January and they said they will begin to practice these more often.

The next school board meeting will take place Jan. 22.
