Applicants sought for county’s citizens’ budget review commission

HAMBURG — Erie County Legislature Chairman John Mills announced that the Erie County Legislature is in the process of accepting applications from residents who would like to serve on the Citizens’ Budget Review Commission, which provides civilian oversight of the county’s budget and monitors county finances.

“The commission offers an important level of accountability,” Mills said. “Separate from any county office or department, members of the public provide an independent review of the county budget and finances. I believe this is extremely beneficial to the taxpayers, as it provides an opportunity for residents to serve in a very vital, hands-on role.”

This commission is made up of nine members. The county executive, chairman of the Legislature, majority leader and minority leader each have one appointment. A majority of the Legislature must approve five additional members. The commission’s guidelines require that appointees represent a variety of industries.

The five Legislature appointments must include a certified public accountant, banking/finance professional, an attorney with local government or finance experience, a professional with organized labor experience, an individual from the business community and two members based on recommendations from the public.
