Local Holy Week church services for 2014

SOUTHTOWNS — Holy Week services for Saints Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Church are as follows:

– Holy Thursday, April 17: 9 a.m. morning prayer service and 7 p.m. Mass of the Lord’s Supper.

– Good Friday, April 18: 9 a.m. morning prayer; 2 p.m. communion service and adoration of the cross, and 7 p.m. stations of the cross service.

– Holy Saturday, April 19: 9 a.m. morning prayer service, 2 p.m. blessing of Easter food service and 8:30 p.m. Easter vigil.

– Easter Sunday, April 20: Masses at 7:30, 9:15 and 10:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. There will be no 5 p.m. Mass.

The Rev. Michelle George Yates will use the Easter theme of resurrection to speak about the need to rekindle ones commitment to church community in her Easter Sunday sermon, “The Rebirth of Spring,” at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Hamburg.

The Easter service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on April 20. The church is located on the corner of Union and Center streets. A holiday coffee hour will follow the service. Religious education and child care will be available.

Berean Free Presbyterian Church, located at 8435 Boston State Road in Boston, will hold an Easter service at 11 a.m. on April 20.

Holy Week services for Hamburg Presbyterian Church, located at 177 Main St. in Hamburg, are as follows:

– Holy Thursday, April 17: the last supper and Tennebrae, 7 p.m.

– Good Friday, April 18: The public may visit the church between noon and 3 p.m.

– Easter Sunday, April 20: Easter Sunday festival at 10:30 a.m. Experience the sights, sounds and story of Christ’s resurrection.

Lake View Community Church, located at 2043 Lakeview Road, will host an Easter service at 10 a.m. on April 20, featuring an instrumental quartet and led by Interim Pastor Stan Weisbrod. An Easter coffee hour will follow. The church is fully accessible. For more information, call 627-5978.

Saint Matthew’s United Church of Christ, located at 5289 McKinley Parkway, will host the following Easter events:

– A Maundy Thursday service at 7:30 p.m. on April 17 will include men of the congregation playing the part of the disciples as they gathered for the Lord’s Supper, a year after the death of Jesus.

– A Good Friday prayer vigil from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. on April 18.

– An Easter sunrise service at 7 a.m. on April 20 at Saint Matthew’s Cemetery, located at 180 French Road in West Seneca. An Easter festival service at St. Matthew’s Church will be held at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Gary Burdick will preach at both Easter services.

Holy Week services for the First Church of Evans, located at 7431 Erie Road in Derby, are as follows:

– A Maundy Thursday service will begin with a choral prelude at 7 p.m. and an upper room communion service at 7:30 on April 17 at the First Church of Evans Community House.

– A Good Friday prayer vigil from 3 – 8 p.m. on April 18 at the First Church of Evans.

– An Easter Sunday service will take place at 7:30 a.m. on April 20 at the First Church Cemetery, followed by a continental breakfast at the Community House. Another service will be held at 10, at the First Church of Evans.

Holy Week services for Saint James United Church of Christ, located at 76 Main St. in Hamburg, are as follows:

– A Maundy Thursday service will be held at 7 p.m. on April 17 with a Lord’s supper, followed by a Tenebrae service. A candlelight remembrance for Jesus’ last days will take place, with Scripture readings and choral responses.

– During Holy Saturday portions of The Great Vigil of Easter Service, an ancient liturgy of the church, with Scriptural roots, will be used. This service will be held at 6 p.m. on April 19. The paschal candle will be lit, during this observance.

– An Easter Sunday service will take place at 10 a.m. on April 20. The Rev. Heather Ramsey Mabrouk will preach and offer communion. Choral music will be provided by The Chancel Choir. Childcare will be available for children through 4 years old; enrichment time will be available for children in kindergarten – fifth grade, following the children’s sermon in the Horton Lounge. An Easter egg hunt will take place on the church lawn or in the school, depending on the weather.

Holy Week services for The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, located on the corner of Thornwood Drive and Boston State Road, are as follows:

– A Maundy Thursday service will be held at 7:30 p.m. on April 17.

– A Good Friday service will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Churchill Memorial Methodist Church, with a joint service.

– An Easter Sunday service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on April 20. An Easter breakfast will begin at 8:30, before the service.

Holy Week services for the Trinity Episcopal Church, located at 261 E. Main St. in Hamburg, are as follows:

– A Maundy Thursday Mass with footwashing will be held at 7 p.m.

– Good Friday services will take place at noon and 7 p.m. on April 18.

– A Holy Saturday service will take place at 9 a.m. on April 19. Experience the great vigil of Easter and first-fire at 8 p.m.

– An Easter Sunday service will take place at 10 a.m. on April 20.

Saint Mary’s Oratory
in East Eden will hold an Easter Sunday Mass at 8 a.m. on April 20.

Holy Week services for the Churchill Memorial United Methodist Church, located at 8019 Boston State Road in Boston, are as follows:

– A Good Friday service will take place at 7:30 p.m. on April 18; the congregation will be joined by parishioners from the Faith United Church of Christ and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

– An Easter Sunday sunrise service will take place at 7 a.m. at the Kollatz residence, which is located at 7752 Omphalius Road at the corner of Lower East Hill Road; a breakfast will follow, at the church. The regular Sunday worship service will take place at the church at 10:45.

The Southtowns Christian Center, a nondenominational family church located at 6619 Southwestern Blvd. in Lake View, will host Easter Sunday services at 8:30 and 10 a.m. on Easter Sunday. Faith United Church of Christ, located at 8651 Boston State Road in Boston, will host the following Holy Week services:

– A Maundy Thursday worship service at 7:30 p.m. on April 17. Communion will be served.

– A Good Friday service at 7:30 p.m. on April 18.

– An Easter sunrise service, led by Faith United Church of Christ at the Kollatz residence, located at 7752 Omphalius Road, will be held at 7 a.m. on April 20. A community breakfast will follow, at Churchill Memorial Church.

All Saints Lutheran Church, located at 6065 S. Park Ave. in Hamburg, will host the following Holy Week services:

– A Maundy Thursday service at 7:30 p.m. on April 17.

– A Good Friday service at 7:30 p.m. on April 18.

– Easter Sunday services at 6:30 and 10:30 a.m. on April 20.

First Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at 66 Arthur Ave. in Blasdell, will host the following Holy Week services:

– A Maundy Thursday service at 7:30 p.m. on April 17. The service will conclude with the stripping of the altar.

– A Good Friday Ecumenical service at 1 p.m. on April 18 and a Tenebrae service at 7:30.

– Easter Sunday services will take place on April 20, with a sunrise service at 6:30 a.m. and an festival Easter festival service at 10. Communion will be celebrated at both Easter services. Nursery care will be available during the 10 a.m. service.

Blessed John Paul II Parish, located at 2052 Lakeview Road in Lake View, will host the following Holy Week services:

– Holy Thursday services will begin with Liturgy of the Hours at 8:30 a.m. on April 17. A family shared supper will be held in the school hall at 5:45 p.m. The Mass of the Lord’s supper will be held in the main church at 7:30, followed by nocturnal adoration in the little church, until midnight.

– Good Friday services will begin with Liturgy of the Hours at 9 a.m. on April 18, followed by a 3 p.m. service, with the celebration of the Lord’s passion, veneration of the cross and a communion service. Stations of the cross and a Tenebrae service will take place at 7.

– Holy Saturday will start with Liturgy of the Hours at 8:30 a.m. on April 19, in the main church. Blessing of baskets will take place at 1 p.m. in the main church. Easter Vigil Mass, with the reception of adults into full communion, will be at 8 p.m.

– An Easter Sunday Mass of the resurrection will be held at 8 and 9:30 a.m. and noon on April 20, in the main church.
