Over the past few years the Village of Hamburg has been undergoing a metamorphosis, as many buildings and streets have seen some major overhauls.
Now village officials are contemplating a new look for the street signs within the village.
At the Jan. 3 Village of Hamburg Board meeting, Trustee Paul Gaughan displayed a proposed sign design which has been tentatively approved by the state Department of Transportation.
“At this time we are only looking to replace some of the signs in the heart of the business district,” Gaughan said.
According to Gaughan, they are looking to replace the signs on Union Street, from Buffalo to Center streets; down Center Street around the roundabout to Long Avenue; down Long Avenue to South Buffalo Street and back down South Buffalo, around the roundabout and ending at Union Street.
“We thought we would start here because this is the middle of the business area in the village, encompassing those businesses on Main and Buffalo streets,” Gaughan said.
These signs would be a different color than the village’s other street signs to make them stand out more.
Members of the village board were supportive of the new look and agreed it was complimentary to the overall plan for the village. (A public hearing on the village’s new comprehensive plan will be held at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at the Hamburg Village Hall).
Funding for the new signs would be obtained through fundraisers and possibly from grant money, if available, Gaughan said.
“I really want to stress that no village taxpayers money will be used to pay for these signs,” he said.
How many signs are replaced by the new signs is totally dependent on how much money is raised, Gaughan said.
“I hope that we will be able to move forward on this soon,” Gaughan said.

street sign
"to make them stand out more"?
does not make sense considering if those are the major thoroughfares, then most people already know the road names in those areas.

NEw Signs
Please make sure these signs meet guidelines in the federal Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices! As the "Main" sign is shown, it does not! It needs to say "Main St"
I like the design but the Village needs to make sure this is done right.
