New safety plan, position reductions are among the items discussed by Eden School Board

The Eden Central School Board of Education wrapped up the school year, discussed summer plans, and projected ideas for the upcoming school year at the board meeting held on Monday.

“Due to economic reasons” there will be an abolishment of positions and a reduction of positions from this point, according to the agenda of the board.

The board also approved excessing of library books. There will be a disposing of books that are declared as excess and disposed of as the district deems necessary. What will be done with the books is uncertain.

Some of them will be donated while some will be discarded, according to Superintendent Sandra Anzalone. A voice was heard from the audience asking if they would be recycled; the response was uncertain.

Lucinda Karstedt gave a summarized presentation on the updated technology plan for the Eden School District; a technology plan is required by law. With technology becoming such a prominent factor in current times, the school deems it necessary to adapt.

By 2014 education will become prominently computer based for online test assessments, this includes Regents Exams. Cohorts will soon be receiving their education similar to that of the collegiate level.

Three years from now it will most likely be common to “bring your own device to school,” according to Karstedt. The days of composition notebooks may be dwindling as it is predicted that students will soon be able to bring their laptop to class to take notes.

Nicole Lauer and Keith Crombie presented community service program “Raiders Respond” and its growth. In four years it has grown from 20 to 60 projects. Lauer and Crombie presented a video made and produced entirely by Eden students; it was impressively done, touching, and truly represented how “Raiders Respond” benefits the students and the community.

Due to the nations recent acts of violence, a new safety plan for the school will be implemented by August. The reformed plan will be discussed at the August board meeting; it will not be discussed in full due to the cautious nature in and of itself.

The Annual Reorganization Meeting will be held Monday, July 1, 2013 at 7 p.m. in the Jr./Sr. High School Auditorium.
