A Hamburg resident has been charged with traffic violations in connection with the fatal motorcycle/vehicle accident which killed off-duty Evans Police Officer Frederick Garrasi III, 24, of Angola, at about 12:15 p.m. Friday, May 3 on Lake Shore Road near Rogers Road in Hamburg.
According to police, both Garrasi and the vehicle operated by a 65-year-old female Hamburg resident were headed eastbound on Lake Shore Road when they collided.
According to officials, the vehicle turned right onto Lake Shore Road after stopping for a red light, but pulled into the passing lane. The motorcycle Garrasi was operating was already in the passing lane and struck the rear driver-side of the vehicle, causing him to lose control and then he was ejected from the motorcycle into the roadway of oncoming traffic.
A vehicle traveling westbound in the passing lane was unable to avoid the accident and stuck the motorcycle and Garrasi.
Garrasi was transported to Mercy Hospital, but died from his injuries within minutes of the accident, officials said.
The driver of the first vehicle was charged with moving from lane unsafely and failure to yield the right-of-way at a right turn at a red signal. The second vehicle operator was not charged.
Garrasi had been hired as a full-time police officer on Feb. 6, 2013. He had been working for the department as a part-time officer since December 2011.
