Lake Effect Ice Cream moves to Canal Street

Lake Effect Ice Cream will have a new home in Lockport next season.
The City of Lockport Common Council approved a proposal Wednesday for the purchase of 79-81 Canal Street.
This location, less than a block away from their current 20 Lock St. store, will offer additional space and a better spot for local and tourist traffic.
The proposal submitted Nov. 15, was for $50,000, and would purchase the city property that was currently leased by the Greater Lockport Development Corporation.
Owner Jason Wulf said he and co-owner Erik Bernardi have a goal of opening the store by the start of next season — March or April.
“It’s definitely a larger space,” said Wulf.
Wulf said there is still a lot of work to do inside, but once complete there will be a large area for indoor seating, which would allow them to have extended hours in the future. The other part of the building will be used to make, display and scoop the ice cream.
They are also happy to finally own their own property for the shop.
The Canal Street location will also be a prime spot to attract Erie Canal traffic, visitors of the Lockport Underground Cave and Boat Ride, along with tourists visiting the Discovery Center and other Lockport highlights.
There is also a lot of outdoor seating around the building, perfect for summer weather.
No definite plans have been made on future hours, but Wulf said though they might still close during winter months, having an indoor location, versus their current outdoor pickup window, will allow them to potentially be open during the holiday season, serving Christmas flavors and desserts.
Lake Effect Ice Cream first began in 2008, after longtime friends and neighbors Wulf and Bernardi started to experiment with various ice cream flavors. They began attending fairs and festivals in the area and in 2009, made the switch to a full-time business.
The ice cream can be found in various locations across Western New York, including shops in Buffalo, North Tonawanda, Cheektowaga, Medina, Depew and Amherst. Lake Effect Ice Cream is also available in Lockport Tops and Niagara Produce.
Heading into their fifth year on March 4, the two have created more than 50 plus flavors, including favorites like Salty Caramel, Cinnamon Toast, Peanut Butter Epiphany, Big Wayne’s Cake Batter, Loganberry and Frozen Hot Chocolate.
