Hamburg native to lead in Presidential inauguration parade

When President Barack Obama is inaugurated for his second term on Monday (Jan. 21), Hamburg native and Midshipman 1st Class Ryan Hagelin will be on-hand, leading the way for the Naval Academy’s 24th Company as they march in the inaugural parade.

For Hagelin, who serves as the company’s commander, it’s an exciting opportunity, and one that isn’t lost on the 2009 graduate of Hamburg High School.

“I’m real excited,” he said. “It’s not often that a group this size gets to go to D.C. and honor the Commander and Chief.”

Hagelin, a senior at the Naval Academy in Anapolis, Md., found out last semester that his company would be marching in the inaugural parade. They were chosen as the top company in the brigade based on a criteria that includes drill, physical acumen and academic success.

“We were seen as the best company in the brigade and were asked to march,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity for all of us.”

As a senior, Hagelin is starting to shape his future plans, which he should know more about in the coming months. For now, he knows the basics of what he’ll be doing once he graduates.

“All I know is that I am going to be on a ship somewhere,” he said.

Marching in the inaugural parade will certainly be one of the highlights of his time at the academy, but it won’t be the only one. It’s been an incredible learning experience, Hagelin said, and helped him grow in to the leader he’s become.

“Everything here will help you become a leader,” he said.

While leading his company in the parade will be an unforgettable experience for Hagelin, he isn’t the only one who’s excited.

“I have family on Union Street, and they’re excited for me,” he said. “It’s very new for all of us. Nobody has done anything like this before. We’re all looking forward to it.”
