Jubilee in the Village of Blasdell to close

Blasdell Jubilee on LAke Avenue looking to close by the end of September

Residents in Blasdell will have one less option for groceries as Jubilee, located on Lake Avenue, will be closing its doors sometime in mid-September, said owner Kevin Connelly.

“We’ve struggled the last couple of years,” said Connelly. “It was a very difficult decision.”

According to Connelly, he has been using money from some of his other sources to try and keep the store afloat with the hope that economically it would turn around.

However, over the last couple of years, he said the store has seen a decrease in sales of between 15 to 20 percent.

“Our sales seemed to drop pretty significantly,” Connelly said.

He said the store, which he has owned since 2000, has been hurt with stores such as the Walmart Supercenter opening, with the retail giant selling groceries.

Another factor that played into the decision was that Jubilee’s in Angola and Gowanda recently converted to Shop ‘n Save.

“I had to decide if I wanted to do that,” said Connelly.

He said it would have been putting a significant investment to upgrade the front end systems, as well as loyalty cards. “That did kind of precipitate things,” Connelly said.

Connelly also owns three Save A Lot locations, including one that recently opened in Hamburg, as well as locations in Lackawanna and Dunkirk.

At this time, he said there are no plans to put a Save A Lot at the current Jubilee location in Blasdell.

He said the owner of the building in Blasdell is working “feverishly” to try and find a new tenant for that building.

Connelly said he is willing to work with the landlord to help facilitate getting a new store in place.

At this time, he is working to try and move out the inventory.

As a result of the impending closing, the Blasdell Jubilee has also changed its store hours and will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. until the store closes for good.

Connelly added he does not have a definitive date as to when he expects the store to permanently close. It will largely depend on when the items are sold.

“Mid-September is when I would target it,” Connelly said.
