Caribbean Extravaganza gets Angola dancing

The Caribbean Extravaganza got these residents dancing at the July 30 installment of the Summer Lawn Chair Concert Series in Angola.

ANGOLA — The village of Angola hosted a night of island music on July 30, when the Caribbean Extravaganza hit the stage for a performance in Centennial Park for the seventh entry in the 2014 Summer Lawn Chair Concert Series.

This installment of Angola’s free concert series was sponsored by the village’s Shultz and Company Hardware and Appliances.

Taking to the stage with steel drums and a keyboard, the Caribbean Extravaganza, a family band that originated from the islands of Trinidad and Tobago before moving to Buffalo, began the evening’s concert with a tropical instrumental number, which led into a rendition of Harry Belafonte’s “Jamaica Farewell.”

The group continued through a set of Carribean-inspired renditions of hit songs including Gloria Estefan’s “Conga,” the Beach Boys’ “Kokomo,” Jimmy Buffet’s “Margaritaville” and Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry.”
The Caribbean Extravaganza also performs each Friday at Mickey Rats Beach Club, located in Angola.

Throughout the night, the members of the Caribbean Extravaganza encouraged the audience members to participate in the music and dance in front of the gazebo. To further involve the audience, the musicians invited the children in attendance to come up by the stage to join in as they performed the “Hokey Pokey.” As kids and adults alike danced along to the song, the band continued with a string of selections in a similar vein including the “Macarena,” “The Twist” and “Shake, Rattle and Roll.”

The band ended its set with a finale performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

During the evening, the Brant-Evans Girl Scout troop sold soft drinks and hot dogs, and weekly 50/50 ticket raffle was held for a chance to win either a cash prize, one of three New Era baseball caps or a DVD player provided by the Shultz Company. Attendees could also purchase tickets for a chance to win a handmade quilt provided by the Friends of the Village. Tickets will continue to be available throughout the remainder of the summer concerts, with the quilt to be given away at the final performance.

The 32nd Summer Lawn Chair Concert Series, presented by the Angola Parks and Gazebo Committee, Evans Recreation and the village of Angola, will continue every Wednesday this summer in Centennial Park with the New Angola Theater as a back-up rain location. The final entry in the series will take place on Aug. 27 with a performance by the Frankfurters.

The next free concert on Aug. 6 will feature the Erie County Wind Ensemble as the musical guest in a show sponsored by the Lake Shore Central Teacher’s Association. A performance by the Music Krew will follow on Aug.13.
