Crosby makes Eagle Scout at 13

TONAWANDA - Will Crosby a 13-year-old Hoover Middle School student, completed his Eagle Scout project on Nov. 6. His task was to build birdhouses for Sheridan Park and Brighton Park as a conservation project.

“I like camping and I also have a lot of friends there from school and I like doing the activities that we do,” said Will.

At 13 it is a big accomplishment to be making Eagle Scout, his father Jason Crosby said that the average age is usually around 16 years old. On top of making his Eagle Scout he is also an honor roll student, first cello in his schools orchestra and a purple belt in karate.

This year, they have a special patch for the 100-year anniversary of Eagle Scout and you get a special award if you make it this year. That motivated a lot of the boys in their troop and they are hoping to have more finish this year.

“My favorite trip is “Claimjumper,” which is like a big game of capture the flag with more than two teams,” said Will.

His father, Jason, said this event takes place every year in June during Fathers Day weekend. They have four or five troops from the Ken-Ton area that participate. On top of the game of capture the flag they also have the kids show off a lot of their scout skills.

“Whoever earns the most gold’s from capture the flag and the scout skills will win,” said Jason. “It’s everyone’s most favorite thing and it’s what keeps the older kids involved.”

Jason said that whenever scouting makes it into the news these days it seems to be for reasons that are not good, like the recent abuse allegations from 30 plus years ago.

“That's not what scouting is about,” said Jason. “It’s to keep kids active and teach them about outdoors.”

He said on top of camping and activities they do a lot of community service like Will’s bird houses, and painting churches among other things.

“We are very proud of Will and all the boys working on their Eagle Scout project this year and we have a big active troop. I encourage anybody who has an interest in the outdoors and camping to join the boy scouts,” said Jason.
