Gloria J. Symer Memorial Scholarship awarded to Lancaster student

LANCASTER- Graduating Lancaster Central High School senior Alexandra L. Hoeglmeirer was the recipient of the 2013 Gloria J. Symer Memorial Scholarship award.

School Guidance Counselor Claudia Tryjankowski presented the $2,500 reward during the school’s well-attended annual senior class recognition night held Monday, June 3 in the school’s auditorium.

Alexandra is the daughter of Leonhard M. and the late Mrs. Hoeglmeirer of Lancaster. She is planning to attend Georgetown University this fall to continue her studies.

In 2002, Mrs. Symer’s family established a Private Foundation in her memory which was dedicated to funding the scholarship. She was an employee of the Lancaster Central School District and believed in helping young people prepare for the future by providing them with encouragement and resources for their meaningful post high school education.

Selection criteria for the scholarship include such factors as humanistic behavior, service to the local community, etc. However, the primary mission of the scholarship is to motivate students at Lancaster High to aim high in their choice of a college or university.

For this reason the Scholarship Trustees recommend that whenever possible students apply to at least one highly ranked well-endowed institution because their grants are frequently generous and the cost disparity with other schools is minimal.
