Student artwork for a drug-free life

HAMBURG — Western New York students in kindergarten – 12th grade may submit original, drug-free artwork and poetry, dedicated to celebrating a drug-free new year, for WNY United’s 2014 Drug-Free New Year art and poetry contests.

Winners and their families will be invited to a press conference at the Hamburg Fairgrounds to showcase their winning pieces and light the drive safe tree. Entry forms must be filled out completely and attached to all entries. Late entries will not be accepted.

First place winners in each category will receive a WiNnY Award, made by Steel Crazy Iron Art. Second and third place winners will also receive awards. Educators who submit more than 10 entries in either category will be entered into a drawing to win a gift certificate.

Art will be reviewed & voted on by the marketing teams at Crowley Webb and Travers Collins & Co. using the following criteria:

– Clarity: a drug-free message (drug or alcohol-related).

– Creativity: design, artistic use of materials and use of color.

– Craftsmanship/skill: based on the age level of the students.

All students in New York state are eligible to enter. The categories are: kindergarten – fourth grade, fifth – eighth grade and ninth – 12th grade.

Entries may be mailed or hand-delivered to WNY United 1195 Niagara St., Buffalo, NY 14213 no later than Nov. 4. Label: Drug Free New Year Art Contest. Entries will not be returned.

Any medium is acceptable. The maximum size for a flat piece is 11-by-17 inches.

Students’ names, school names, grades and phone numbers must be listed on the back of each artwork. Artwork may not incorporate any copyrighted characters, photographs, magazine or newspaper illustrations.
