Recent grad in board seat

HAMBURG — Just two years ago, Davis Podkulski was a senior in high school at Frontier High School, preparing to enter college at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Now, the still-teenager will have plans of a very different kind, in addition to pursuing his college degree(s)- helping make decisions regarding Frontier from the perspective of a school board member.

Podkulski earned election to one of two open board seats in the Frontier School District on May 20, along with incumbent candidate Janet Plarr, edging fellow incumbent candidate Jack Chiappone. Podkulski garnered 1,213 votes and Plarr, 1,089, compared to Chiappone’s 935.

Podkulski had been an advocate for implementing the ex-officio, non-voting student representative to the board. He had campaigned extensively for the open board seat, in addition to undertaking college classes as the semester drew to a close. Plarr has served on the board for the last 20 years, currently as board president. The two each earned a five-year board seat.

Chiappone served one five-year term on the board.

District voters overwhelmingly passed Proposition 1, the district expenditure budget of $74,271,938 by a margin of 1,395 to 496. Proposition 2, the purchase of eight school buses, was also passed, 1,253 “Yes” to 627 “No.” The expenditure budget represents a 1.44-percent increase from the 2013-14 total of $73,215,727. Both have increases of 3.15 percent, with an overall district tax levy of $36.22 million.

Proposition 2 includes spending $867,290 for the purchase of eight district school buses.
